The tip. People throw stuff like that away when it's still got plenty of life left in it, and, if you're lucky next time you're passing drop in - you might get yourself a bargain!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Try LBS warehouse . I just brought some 8ft and 10ft ones from there..

Try Wilkinsons, I found them cheaper than B&Q and Homebase.0

Try your local Allotment or Horticultural society, most have a trading hut and you normally do not need to hold an allotment to join, prices are so much better, and you're helping support them.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

I have to say that I bought some cheap canes from Poundland and the like and they were absolutely useless... I found if I bought the more expensive ones, I got a couple of years out of them.... I picked up a couple of plastic coated canes from Homebase last winter in the sale but they are just a rusting mess... I'll stick to my canes... Although, every year, when I prune my large shrubs in the spring (such as flowering currant, buddlea) , I keep the thick, woody stems and use them around the plants... I just make sure that I cut them at an angle at the bottom so I can shove them into the soil... and then I wrap green lengths of washing line around them...(I buy the cheap stuff and it is excellent for this purpose as it is plastic coated and so doesn't damage the plants... ... The smaller branches, I use for smaller plants !!
I hope this helps....0 -
I bought canes yesterday at Focus - they were 4 ft, but they did have other sizes in the deal and it was buy one get one free. The 4ft ones were £3.05 and there were ten in each bundle, so I suppose not to bad working out at 15p each, they seem to be ok as I used them to make wigwams for my dwarf beans.Every days a School day!0

I find it's how you look after your canes which helps them to last. When you have finished with them, dry them thoroughly, then store in a dry shed over winter. Preferably hung up and not touching any part of the shed.
One of my local garden centres sells them really cheaply. I can't remember how much, but I'm sure much cheaper than the LBS website.
I have used hazel cut, but I find it only lasts a year or two, then gets brittle.
What you really need to do, is get your own bamboo plant or two set up. I wish I had the space.
I do have some tiny hazel trees I am thinking about gorilla planting on a bit of waste groundFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
