Best deals on broadband- limited choice?

In the next couple of months I am taking over the bills at my brother's flat where I currently rent a room as he is moving into his girlfriend's. We have virgin media which currently totals £77- we have a box in both bedrooms, then the main one in living room, plus internet & phone line. I don't use the phone to make outgoing calls- it's only for relatives to call us on, don't really want to downgrade tv tho will look at package as don't watch geography/factual channels so if we pay for them I will get rid, will get rid of at least 1 bedroom box as his room will become a spare room but not sure about internet. Do I need a BT phone line to get Talk Talk? How long would possible change over take? Another option (ccording to a friend who says they have done this) is for my brother to call virgin media & cancel and then I get it again in a month or so- will that make me a new customer? Or should I threaten to leave as tightening belt and see if they offer me a deal (don't want to threaten to leave if I actually wont be able to start with someone else due to cost or needing Bt line put in or something?)
