harddisc data recovery

Hi all,

Worst case scenario happened during my vacation. The harddisc of
my Samsung N130 seems to be damagedand all videos from our holidays are on it.

Could anyone recommend someone good who will be able to restore
the data from the broken harddisk.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Symptoms..?

If it's simply not starting up, you can whip the HDD out a slip in into this caddy(£3.13) in order to create a portable USB hard drive. Plug in to another machine to retrieve your info.

Then you can pop it back into the Samsung and effect repairs.

If its physical damage and you're getting lots of clicking or clunks, Retrodata - about £500 for 20GB. You send the drive off to them and they tell you what they can recover before going ahead.

Thanks for the feedback so far, I just had a look into the BIOS and there is says:

IDE Channel 0: None

Is it possible that the motherboard is defect? When I start the computer, it just says that the Operating system cant be found...
and there is no activity at the hard disc LED

Unlikely to be the MB, more likely to be HDD failure.

As the drive isn't detected at hardware level, your only option is intrusive recovery as already mentioned by Hammyman (an expensive lesson in why you should have a backup plan in force).

Have you purchased the caddy?

It can be a cable/wiring problem . This is a common problem with net(note)books. If you have your warranty expired - check SATA cable ( open your netbook , remove Sata cable from HDD and plug it again).If you have warranty or you cannot open your netbook -ask for support

This would be a very Rare thing to happen, as most manufacturers screw the drive in to stop physical movement and the HDD male connector is a molded piece of plastic which makes contact to the female portion of the HDD and is usually secured very good.

Nothing wrong in taking the HDD out and plugging it back in, but if it is a loose cable that isn't going to fix it.

Its still under warranty, so I guess the best option will be to send it in for repair and ask them to also send me back the broken hard disk.
Then I can play around with it and hopefully get some data out at some point. Maybe I just wait some years until these data recovery procedures become cheaper.

Anyone heard of those here:

They are offering if for £200, sounds "rather" cheap...

Forget about it, if they replace the hard drive they will not send you the old one.
Ask them beforehand. Perhaps they will allow you to remove the HDD in order to attempt to retrieve the data before sending.

I just talked to them and apparently they are trying to recover the data in any case if the harddisk should be broken. Sounds almost too good to be true, lets hope they actually do it!
