In this instance I feel the police were 100% correct, had the old lady been gravely ill faffing around to gain information could have cost her life.
It's that same unswerving faith in authority that let the killers of Jean-Charles de Menezes walk away scot-free from his murder.

"Had de Menezes been carrying a bomb and had we not shot him, he could have killed an old lady."

Ah yes. Community policing in Ireland. Works a treat. Tar? Feathers? Anyone?

If you've nothing to hide then you've nothing to fear!

While the British government of slimy hand-wringing liberal trash was prevaricating over a ban on mephedrone, community activists worked overtime, stamping out the evil death trade before any more young lives were robbed from us.

If you support the drug trade then perhaps you should be in Helmand Province, helping with the opium harvest.

Nothing like being over dramatic and comparing two totally different situations now is there?

FIL was in a similar situation a few years back. First the police said they weren't liable, but after some to and fro-ing they eventually paid up for all the damages plus costs for decorating.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but the realities of 'communities policing themselves and leaving the police out of the equation' in Northern Ireland is not the idyll described by asbokid. I grew up in the 70's, and with family on both sides of the conflict - and border - in Ireland. Its an ugly, revolting and nasty business, with the 'community policing' banner often being used as a name for thugs having their own way, and committing whatever viciousness they need to in order to continue with their stranglehold in their patch.

From a UN report on the links between terrorism and crime:

'It is nearly impossible to estimate how widespread the involvement of terrorist groups in the drug trade really is. Casteel (2003), the Assistant Administrator for Intelligence, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, reported that 14 of the 36 groups designated as foreign terrorist organizations on the U.S. State Department’s list are involved in drug trafficking. He used these facts to argue that the war on drugs and the war on terrorism are and should continue to be linked. However, as Schmd (2004) accurately noted, there are hundreds of terrorist organizations and hundreds of drug trafficking groups, but it is usually the same dozen or so groups that get identified as being involved in both types of activities. They include Al Qaeda, the Colombia-based AUC, ELN, and FARC, the tri-border Islamic Group in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, the Shining Path in Peru, the PKK in Turkey, IMU in Uzbekistan, the Islamic Jihad in Palestine, the LTTE in Spain, Hizballah in Lebanon, and the RIRA in Northern Ireland.

Where did you obtain the quote from? That sounds like a bit more damage than would normally happen in a forced entry.

  • I think I would be grateful to have neighbours that cared enough to worry about my mothers health, many wouldn't.

I wouldn't fall out with them over it and as suggested before get a keysafe or let them know in future that your mum will be away because next time they might assume she's away and she could be laying on the floor seriously ill.

Ive always understood that if the police have the need to breakdown a door they will do and I doubt you'll get anything from them unless it's done from insurance.

The opinion that the police should prioritise the potential of saving a life over the cost of a new door is nothing to do with bling faith in authority. As has been said previously, had they decided not to act on the advice of the neighbour and there had been an old lady dying in her front room there would be a public outcry!

As for your comment about walking scot free away from murder I would also hope the police would do the same again if a suspected terrorist runs from them, jumps a barrier, and heads towards a train. Yes he may have turned out to not have any terrorist intentions and he certainly didn't deserve to die but had he been innocent of other crimes and not run away he would not have been shot.

He did not run away or jump the barrier...that's been confirmed....check it for yourself What crimes did he commit that deserved being shot 7 times in the head? Ah he looked vaguely like someone on their list....and he actually didn't!

To quote myself 'he certainly didn't deserve to die'. I'm not quite sure where in that statement you felt I suggested he deserved being shot?
