I booked the Bradford-London ticket ok but still looking for trains or coach out of London going to Leeds or Bradford next Friday afternoon, leaving about 5/6pm orso. Best I've found is £8.50 +50p booking fee with National Express leaving at 1700hrs. Any cheaper fares about like?
Thanks
Megabusplus is 50p dearer.0 -
Avantix Traveller, but you can get them on the TfL single fares finder.
East Coast don't give PAYG fares; the OP mentioned using Oyster PAYG so I gave the fares.
The £8 ticket will be an Off Peak Travelcard.
I've had a look at the EC website, and bizarrely it gives me the Off Peak Day Return (CDR) fare from ELS to LTN (or LUT) as £10.00. Yet Avantix Traveller shows the CDR fare as £11.00. I can't find a £12.50 fare. I can offer no explanation as to this discrepancy. They both agree that the SDR fare is £13.90, however.
PAYG is available as singles only, and if the OP touches in before 0630, they can still take the 0634 train, and yet pay the Off Peak rate
At Elstree & Borehamwood, there is a requirement to touch out... even if you already have purchased a paper ticket from there in advance, I don't know where the readers are but you may struggle to get back on the same train. However this isn't a problem in this case; that train arrives at Elstree & Borehamwood at 0740, and the next train is at 0750. A further change is required at St Albans to get on a train to Luton Airport Parkway.
Thanks for this but I've just had a look on the tfl oyster site and it says an peak time day sgl between zones 4-6 which is fr Sutton Comm to Els and Borehamwood is £2.30. Is this right or am I looking at the wrong fares?
The Els & Borehamwood to Luton Air-Parkwy is £10 off peak day return, my journey just qualifies for that I think? I need to be at Luton Airport Parkway for 10am and on east coast website it says theres one at 0906 getting to luton at 0927.
Sounds much better than getting a £28.60 anytime day rtn fr Sutt Common to Luton Airport Parkway if I'm able to get these fares!0 -

That fare assumes you don't go outside zones 4-6 - but from Sutton to Elstree you do go through 1 2 and 3 as well
The Oyster fare for your journey is £5.20 peak - or £6.50 if you use the underground to cross London. (£3.20 or £4.40 off peak)
Elstree to Luton at 0906 is off peak, yes0 -
Thanks for clarification!
The tfl fares site page doesnt seem to imply that really so I thought it was much cheaper! So I would be charged for the zones 1-6 fare really then wont I? or am I wrong here?
I'll most probs be taking National Rail from Sutton to Elsetree
Still it works out cheaper than the £28 and something pence for the anytime day rtn sutton common-luton parkway!0 -
Which ones the national rail fare from sutton to elsetree peak again?0
-
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14414.aspx is the page you want. Yes you will pay the zone 1-6 fare
You are charged for all the zones you travel through, not just the start and end points.0 -
Thanks for your help! I'm wasntt too familiar with how the charging works but I am now thanks! very hap!
Sorry for all the questions but how is the 0906 elsetree to luton off-peak? Is it different in London?
Because I'm from Leeds and off-peak is usually from 0930, its the same generally in Liverpool where I went to uni but in the past 2 years orso they've taken away some of the off-peak tickets and now just have Anytime tickets! Madness really I think as anytime tickets are way over-priced esp in Leeds!!0 -
The definition of off peak is in principle different for every station and can vary with the direction of travel. Generalising - some of the time anyway - can lead to wrong answers
I would deduce from the fares I've looked up that off peak in this case for travel away from London is after 0900. Towards London it's after 09300 -

As dzug said, the timeband of any (peak usually but not always) restriction depends on the particular ticket. For example, the journey London Euston - Milton Keynes Central at 1700 on a Wednesday is restricted for the holder of a Milton Keynes Central - London Terminals Off-Peak Return ticket (restricted between 1645 and 1845 inclusive), yet fine if you hold a Glasgow Central - London Terminals Off-Peak Return (restricted before 0905 and not at all in the afternoon).
The abstract of the restriction text of the ticket in question is this:
Elstree & Borehamwood (ELS) - Luton Airport Parkway (LTN)

(Same text applies to Elstree & Borehamwood (ELS) - Luton (LUT) Off-Peak Day Return.)
This explains why the 0906 from ELS is not restricted.
Also as has been pointed out, restrictions could be different depending on the direction of travel and whether you're using the outward or return portion of a ticket.
For your information, the restriction text for the ticket in the opposite direction is this, so you can compare and contrast:
Luton Airport Parkway (LTN) - Elstree & Borehamwood (ELS)
Off-Peak Day Return
Route Any Permitted
£11.00Restriction : TS
Valid as listed below Mondays to Fridays (by any train on other days)

RETURN TRAVEL
Valid by any train
So if there is a train departing at 0906 from LTN going towards London then this ticket would not be valid.
