Samsung RSH1 fridge & Freezer problem

I have read a lot of worrying posts on the WWW about Samsung American style fridge freezers.

I have a RSH1NHMH1/XEU (a UK model without the ice maker). It's a few months past it's 2 year warranty and has now stopped working:(

The fault(s) sound slightly different to what I have read elsewhere in that I am not hearing a buzzing or other strange noises, and both the fridge & freezer have totally stopped cooling.

The fan underneath the rear of the unit is spinning and the compressor is very hot to the touch. The only unusual sound I hear is an occasional clicking sound from around the compressor area (like something is trying to switch on). There was no sign of any ice build up in the freezer at all, but there was some ice build up in the fridge compartment at the left bottom of the cowling covering the fans.

I've had it powered off for 48 hours now, but the same problem is there when I power on.

Any ideas out there?

All you can do is get an engineer round to have a look then take it from there.

I saw this on the Samsung website a few days ago when looking to see who we could contact about ours giving problems outside of warranty. Have registered ours for the maintenance, not heard back yet though. Seems your model also part of the 'safety notice'?

It seems I can't post links as I'm newly registered, but this is the url

Thanks. We actually received a note some time last year & contacted Samsung as requested. An engineer came out and did replace something (I wasn't around at the time so not entirely sure what it was, but I think it was a circuit board somewhere). When I check that link, my fridge is not affected, so probably didn't need that anyway!

I have logged a query with Samsung via their website & they have advised that an engineer will be out (free of charge) to replace 6 parts, all of which are on a 5 year warranty. These all sound like the "fix kit" for the known problem which has been widely reported. I'm not entirely sure that this is the problem as the symptoms aren't exactly the same. Never the less, we'll have them out to make these changes & if that doesn't fix it, hopefully the engineer will be able to tell us what is wrong.

The Samsung RS, RSH and old SRS series fridge freezers are absolutely riddled with problems and they appear to be problems that Samsung can't rectify. They are just grief.

I am currently writing an article based on many reports that the liners are splitting which, any fridge engineer will tell you, means that the cabinet is a write off, it cannot be repaired. Yet Samsung, in their wisdom, are patching them up with a bit of aluminium sticky-back sheet I suspect just trying to nurse them out of warranty when it's not their problem.

They still suffer from the over-freezing issues or the SRS and RS series and, if you even consider buying one make sure it is heavily, heavily discounted or covered by a warranty.

Samsung will repair the RS ones up to the five years per Watchdog but, so far as I am aware, they don't want to know about the later RS series.

Well, that is apart from the modification to install another board that stops the fridge from going on fire and potentially blowing up which would have been what was done above.

It's just good news all the way with these isn't it!!!!

I had the repair folks round & it was the compressor which had died, which I kind of suspected.

    £192 later & I'm back in business.

Had a conversation with their customer service people & explained that my last fridge freezer cost less than their compressor & lasted 4 times as long. I'm sure you can imagine how much concern they showed about that....

Oh well. I guess I'll start saving for a new fridge now as I'm sure this isn't going to last more than another year or 2.

Happy to take recommendations for a decent side-by-side style large fridge freezer :)

fpepper - glad you've had a good result, how did you get in touch with them if I may ask? I've filled in the forms online but have had no response. I don't like the idea of having a potential fire starter in my house nor the fact that my fridge is freezing up and ruining the food - either freezing or alternatively going up to 12C :(

Hi, eventually the best number was 0845 7267864. We didn't have any problems until Comet fitted a modification reccommended by Samsung. Comet were rubbish but eventually after 3 engineer visits and many phone calls the replacement was ordered. I mentioned the Watchdog issue and the fact the machine is "Not fir for purpose" Don't give up on them if the repairs don't work. Sounds like all these early machines had this problem and they kept selling them. As for our new one only time will tell. GOOD LUCK!!!!

After giving Samsung a glowing report for mending my fridge freezer, it has now broken again! It's just cost £200 for a new compressor, and I've had to throw out all the food in the freezer, because by the time I noticed it wasn't working, all the food had thawed out. The temperature indicator still read -15deg! When you've paid nearly £900 for one of these, they should last longer than 2 years. I retract all my good reviews for Samsung!! I wish I could take this further, as it appears that a lot of people have lost a lot of money through buying Samsung fridge freezers. Acording to "Which" Samsung score lowest on reliablity out of all the fridge freezer manufacturers.
  • I contacted Samsung on 01932 454358 and spoke to a nice lady in Cairo.
I informed her that my Samsung FF RSH1NBRS (1/XUE) purchased in 2009 had the following faults:-
    1) intermittent noise fault
    2) intermittent cooling fault

Straight away the lady told me that the Fridge-Freezer warantee had been extended by another 3 years by samsung and that they would have a engineer contact me within 24 hours and arrange a repair date within 7 days.
I have found Samsung's customer services to be good so far.
