Maestro (in the UK) is basically a re-brand of the old Switch debit card (utilising the same payment network). Debit Mastercard utilises Mastercard's payment network used by their credit cards. Mastercard owns both Maestro and Debit Mastercard.

What's the difference? I'd imagine running on the one unified payments network causes less compatibility issues when using a Debit Mastercard internationally. Although branded the same, Maestro cards run on different payment networks depending on the country/ region you're in.

Most maestro cards now have 2 modes, when you stick it into the machine it asks you if you want Maestro UK or Maestro INT.

I presume the domestic one is processed via switch , and then it is processed by mastercard when you are out of the country.

They've recently sent me a new card which still says "Maestro" on the top right. Images on their website also still show the Maestro logo.

However, they've now gone to 16 digit card numbers though (rather than the old 19 digits), so you may be right.
My Northern Bank account is Maestro and they have only had 16 digits on their cards
