Hi

I posted a week or so a go here.

Two weeks ago I had a new alternator fitted by a garage, paid £200 just for thr alternator.

When I went and collected the car in the afternoon I paid in cash and was given a invoice, and verbally told that parts and labour have a 2 year warranty.

When I started thr car to leave a whining noise came from the underbonnet; I called the guy over (the boss) and he had a quick look under the bonnet and said to me the noise was normal and would go after a few 100 miles.

Well a week later and 260 miles more on the clock, the noise is still there at idle and at revs below <3000.

I took the car back last Monday, the guy (the boss again) he had a listen again, and this time said it was most likely thr air-con pulley, although it never made any noise before nor was the air-con not working.

He told me I was looking two hours labour to look to see what the problem was, I said I'd think about it.

Three days ago, I was late at work and on my way home on Wenesday night I used the head lights for the first time since having the new alternator fitted, I noticed they were flickering and put the interior light on when I got home to see if that did too and it did.

The next day I contacted the garage and explained the problems to be told to return the car in two weeks and they'll have a look.

Fair enough, but today driving along the motorway this afternoon the battery light cane on the dash and the engine died!!!
Managed to get it on the hard, but wouldn't restart.

I phoned my recovery service, an hour later told what I knew "your altenator has died and isn't charging"

Was recovered home, and he had another quick look and said all looks okay.

Now in stuck with a car I cannot drive, when I can't get anymore time off at the moment.

I'm angry that I've been lied to about the noise, as te recovery guy started it on a booster and the noise has gone, since the alternator has died!

Phoned Trading standards awaiting a phone back as left a message.

Any advice??

Sounds like they fitted a duff/incorrect alternator.

So much for a proper job huh.

I paid the full wack for the correct alternator, so they have a lot to put right.

Otherwise I be taking this to the small claims court without a second thought

I had a genuine brand new Ford alternator supplied fitted on my MK3 Mondeo at the local Forx main dealer. I got change out of £200.

Think as bobbles said, they bbe fitted the wrong alternator.

Keep in mind mine is a 2.5 v6 and I was told by Ford it has a more pricey alternator fitted.

Just annoyed that I now have to mess around

Mine is a diesel - they're the most expensive alternator of all on any car because they usually also contain a pump to provide the vacuum for the brake servo as well as being an alternator.

I did one the other day on my drive... it is the second hardest alternator i have replace, with exception to the merc A class (second generation).
The alternator cost me £95 and it took me about 2 hours.. I think.

Only a few actually contain the vac pump.. most are either belt driven or cam driven :D

Ebay search reveals that a 2.5 V6 MK3 Mondeo alternator is £10 to £20 more expensive than a 2.0 TDCI. Doubt they're genuine Ford products but they do say they're brand new.
  • most older vehicle cars 2 years and older will most certainly have recon replacments on the shelf even at dealers alternators,cv's,driveshafts, starters, deisel pumps and only come with a 12month warranty especially recon electrical related items.

whilst most are fine some can come with a fault from factory.

depending on wher they purchased the alternator (probs their motor factor supplier) it will most likely have that 12 month warranty and bad information given to you via the garage, after all its not whats said its whats on paper that counts.

considering the problem youve experience, i'm woundering why the garage didnt perform a simple charging test when you first noticed the problem, alternators are not like new exhausts with flexi pipes on that when newly fitted make a noise (like tubular bells or a humming) until its bedded in, if it makes squeek or a high pitched electrical noise it should be tested for faults before the customer gets the car back and they didnt do this?

you complained further down the line too as to wich again a simple bring it in we'll test it and rule it out before we put the finger on a different part like the aircon pully if it is that its under warranty so the very least youll get the alternator done free.

after this i would search out another independant and not use them again.

They probably overtensioned the aux drive belt. That strain wrecked the alternator bearings, and the alternator failed. If so, it's probably a good thing the alternator did fail before the overtensioned belt also wrecked the p/s pump and/or the a/c compressor.
