Buyer wanting to send item back? Postage?

Just sold my first thing ever on ebay, so be gentle with me on this!
Sold a battery for a power tool to a guy, he has now received this item. He just emailed to ask if he could send it back for a refund as it doesn't fit his power tool. I'm almost 100% it should, as he is saying he has the same power tool as me (that the battery fits), but that the battery doesn't fit?
His email is quite nice, simply asking for a return and refund, but I'm wondering what to do about postage? I charged him 8 pounds delivery and it actually cost me almost 10 pounds (my fault, I know!). Should I keep the postage he paid for me to deliver, and ask him to pay the delivery back to me, and I refund the amount for the item? Or should I be offering to refund the postage costs too?
Thanks x

I'd try and avoid a return/refund because people have started sending back dud ones and keeping your good one. In fact, I would
explain that you're really sorry but due to the above you cannot do refunds..he'll have to resell on ebay like most people do.
Ebay is starting to become a lot more hassle than its worth to be honest.Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE0 -
Except he could open an SNAD & win a dispute by putting anything into the dispute. He would be told to return to you for a full refund, including the initial postage costs. The cost to get back to you he would have to pay himself.
If it's the first sale you've had you need the good feedback.
I would offer a refund on the return of the battery but explain that you can't pay for the return costs & suggest that if he sells maybe it would be better for him to sell it on himself. It could be that he's planning on sending you his old duff one.0 -
Re. Hermum's suggestion, possibly request he return via signed for post, and upon receipt and confirmation that the serial numbers are the same, a refund will be issued, with apoliges for sounding pedantic, but too many horror stories.......I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0
