HELP! Why won't my laptop download?

Hi!
This is my first time on these forums, because I'm having a crisis!! And I'd appreciate any help!
I use a web based email - and for a while now i've been unable to download attachments or attach files to emails. A box comes up saying that there isn't enough memory to allow it. I've emptied temp int files etc, but to no afail. It won't let me save attachments either.
I spoke to a man from my broadband provider (who seemed to know his computer stuff) and by the end of our converstaion he seemed to think that the problem was to do with my Norton AV, which has been playing up since my problems started. I'd been running Norton Int Sec 04 on my lap top (had it free years ago).
Finally having enough of Norton playing up, I made the decision today to remove Norton Int Sec from my laptop and put free software on it inside. So the deed was done - goodbye to Norton, but as soon as I started trying to download avast AV etc, the same problem happened - it seemed to be downloading ok, but right at the end - the same box came up saying I had insufficient memory. Argh! It won't let me download anything, not a free firewall, or spyware stuff. So I'm seriously concerned, hence this crisis message.
Can anybody help me? What's the problem with my laptop? What should I do next?
Help!

HI there,
how much hard drive space have you got,
start > my computer > c: ( right click ) properties0 -
Thank you for taking the time to reply!
To answer both questions - the exact message which pops up is;
C:\Documents and Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content. IE5\...
Then it says; There is not enough free memory to run ths program. Quit one or more programs and then try again.
To answer murk 11 ; I have 10.3GB of used space and 26.9GB of free space
I would appreciate any further help,
Thank you!!

In ie, try tools, internet options, temporary internet files, delete..
Try installing and running ccleaner (if you can), if that doesn't work, try
start, run, cmd
chkdsk c: /F/R
then reboot.
if it still doesn't work, post back.
(It sounds like you may have some corruption in your temp internet files area, or some program stopping you writing there) Do you have a firewall installed, which one? Is your antivirus upto date?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thank you for your reply, but....
More problems - i went into my control panel, found internet options, clicked, but nothing happened - wouldn't let me go any further. I tried other options within the control panel, but would't let me open anything! Mmm. So can't get to temp int files to delete.
Next problem - doesn't allow me to download cccleaner. Same box comes up -saying not enough memory to run program.
Next problem - sorry to be clueless but I don't understand what you mean by;
'start, run, cmd
chkdsk c: /F/R
then reboot.'
I went as far as start and run, but then a box came up about creating a shortcut????
Do I don't have a firewall installed at the moment - I uninstalled Norton Int Sec this afternoon (which included firewall) thinking that that was the problem - fully intending to download a free firewall - but wouldn't let me download. At the moment, I have no anti virus either - again was intending to download avast to day, but doesn't let me!!
Argh!!!!!

Check you've totally uninstalled Norton. Compaq / HP have a habit of supplying Norton with their systems, we use them at work, and there's a few different Norton apps that need uninstalling to get rid of it fully.0

If I may put my 2p in, it sounds to me like a malware problem. I'd run the usual suspects (adaware and spybot search and destroy) in safe mode and see how you get on. I realise you can't download on your laptop, but you can use another computer, save them and stick them onto your laptop. You might want to post a Hijackyhis log if you've still got problems. Look at the spyware/malware removal sticky at the top of the 1st page of this forum.

I've tried going to the add/remove programs button in my control panel, so that i can check to see if I've completley uninstalled norton, but it doesn't allow me to go into it....my control panel's been fine, until today!
Don't know what to do!

It's beginning to sound like you don't have administrator rights. Try this..
If you want to log in as Administrator, but it is not show on
the Welcome screen, Hold the Ctrl-Alt key and press Del
twice. This will bring up the normal login and you can log
on as Administrator
If that works, change your normal log on to admin rights or set up another user.

try going into your laptop in Safe Mode and looking in control panel. If still no joy to a system restore back to before you uninstalled it and then uninstall Norton again but take note how many Norton apps there are to uninstall.0
