i discovered this yesterday evening

http://www.whited00r.com/index.html

and i was quite intruiged - has anyone actually tried it ?. I'm really wondering along the lines of speed and overall functionality to be honest. I have an old iPhone 3G running 4.2.1 and it runs like an absolute dog. As i've said in my other thread about the phone in here, you can press the icon to enter SMS messaging and it'll take 12-13 seconds to actually get there.

If this whited00r is optimized for older handsets it might be worth investigating.

Looks more like the IOS3 modded to look like 4, so should be faster as it's not as big code wise with a few apps on top.

Would you phone be as fast if you simply downgraded it to IOS3?

I guess it's possible but the main difference would be that i'd have to pay O2 to legitimately unlock it. I took the plunge and flashed whited00r last night and it's working pretty well so far.

it's unlocked and jailbroken 'out of the box' and it picked up the orange network fairly quickly.

it made a hell of a difference to when i initially unlocked it and had to use the redsn0w method and flash it with the ipad baseband. i'll see how it handles over the next few days.
  • I am having the same problem with my iphone 3g to the extent taht I feel like getting rid (althouugh I dont really want to).

Assuming I have to jailbreak it to flash this software, can I still use my itunes account etc?

you shouldn't have to pre-jailbreak it - i didn't last night. I downloaded the firmware, fired up itunes and hit SHIFT+"restore". Navigated to the firmware file and selected it and itunes did the rest.

i jailbroke the phone a few months back when i initially got it, but i would imagine that re-flashing it last night just over-wrote anything i'd done.

i've also successfully re-downloaded all my purchased items from the itunes store so your itunes account should be fine.

i found a couple of things last night - it frees up around an extra 25-30mb in on-board memory which is handy for a few extra MP3's :)

It has also massively improved my 3G reception at home. Normally i'd be lucky to get 1 bar, but with whited00r I appear to be getting a solid 5 bar reception on 3G.

It also has 'backgrounding' enabled which I understand is available on IOS 4 with the iPhone 4 - handy little feature.

meant to say earlier, the CEX shop will give you in the region of £150-£187 quid exchange value on an iPhone 3g so if you did get rid of it like that you could pretty much do a straight swap with another decent handset - Desire, HTC 7 'Windows' Phone e.t.c...

It can't improve the radio but it can display signal strength differently. Apple got slated when they did this so probably best treat with caution...

yeah i've found that earlier this evening - it's not as great as i initially thought it was. but then i know when I had a Desire, I tried a few different radios for that over time and did find one or two that improved the signal reception.

    swings and roundabouts i guess.

Just wanted to come back to this. I actually did read last night that the phone does have to already be jailbroken, which mine was.

There was a thread on the Reddit.com /r/apple sub-reddit where someone was saying their jailbroken phone ran about 30% slower than with the genuine Apple iOS/firmware. Nobody disagreed.
