I have a Orange PAYG and a Telewest land-line. What would be the cheapest means of me calling Australia on a daily basis?

I do not know anything about Televest, but for BT landline there are a lot of opportunities to call Australia for just 1p/min anytime. I think you should start with The UKs Cheapest Home Phone Calls Provider article and with international calls checker . I also think Orange PAYG is not a good option for international calls, though if you really need to use mobile for international calls you can use websites mentioned in the above links to reduce cost of such calls.

This looks to be good advice from grumbler. If your sessions are extended and your contact in oz is connected to the web, then suggest s/he installs some voip software such as skype or the more widely communicable sip accounts such as sipgate which can allow you to talk for free. The latter will also offer you a free UK landline number accessible from any phone.

I looked at the Telewest website and it looks to me that calls to Australian landlines are 33.5p per minute.

Therefore, I advise you to set yourself up with an account with 18866.com, then you can call Australia landlines for 2p per minute via their 0808 access number.

You could dial directly using one of the following for just 1p per minute, but first you need to establish for sure what Telewest charge for dialling numbers starting 0844.
