Reserve Price on ebay

Hi all,
I am new to ebay. My late husband used it all the time. I now have a lot of things I need to sell on as I am downsizing, and some are expensive items so I want to add a reserve and not a starting price which may put people off initially. However scared I may incurr quite high charges if things don't sell (estimate reserve or need for items incorrectly). Any tips? I am hoping to add my first item tonight, it is quite daunting as a new seller...
TIA...

The minimum reserve is £50 and it is expensive, see th edetails here:
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/reserve.html
You pay the reserve costs whether or not item sells and in many cases it is actually cheaper to just start auction at what you want for the goods.
Before selling anything high end take a while to get used to ebay and how to protect yourself, and also check otu completed listings to make sure you idea of a fair price is reasonable.
Some tips for new sellers here:

A lot of buyers don't like reserves, there have been a few discussions on here about it. I would rather have a higher start price, at the least that would be accepted.0

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Will check out the other threads later tonight soolin. I did think it seemed expensive, not so much for a one off, but if I am doing multiple sales it is. Thanks again for the responses.0

I don't like reserves, I'd rather just see what the seller wants for the item. If the price is right it will sell anyway.
Have you checked completed listings for the items you are selling? (Search for the item, then in the menu on the left tick the box to display completed listings). You'll have an idea of whether you are likely to get what you want for the item."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". As you say it soon mounts up if you are listing more than a few items and all those listing fees soon cut into your profit.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. No, I didn't even know it existed! Will look at that, thanks that is a great help.0 -
Ebay frequently do free listing weekends, probably one due soon. It may be worth testing the water by putting a few things on at the least you would be happy with & see how they go.
Listings that end evenings tend to sell better, but avoid the soaps or other popular tv shows, seems to be the general opinion.0 -

Thanks for the tips. I've >30 people watching my item, but no bids. Finishes tomorrow night so will see what happens then.
PS. I didn't use the reserve just the price I wanted so testing the water...0 -
Hopefully you get some bidders. Good luck. Tomorrow is in my opinion a rubbish tv night so hopefully they'll be ebaying instead, mine finish tomorrow as well.0

Another new seller polluted by the "when to end an auction" myth.
You are aware that Man Utd are on the box in the semi final of the worlds second biggest football event?
I'm a rugby fan through and through, but I'll be watching that.0
