Poor Levi. Took him to the vet yesterday morning he had his procedure as planned and then we picked him up around 3pm. All last night he was really not with it so spaced out and each time we went to stroke him he cowered like he was scared we would hurt him. i felt absolutely awful - so guilty. Today he has been better, hes started weeing etc again and is eating and drinking normally. Hes tried to lick his wound a few times so ive put him on the lampshade collar thing and once again hes not my friend. He looks so sad when hes got it on but its for his own benefit so its staying on apart from mealtimes.
Hes really not interested in going on walks. This morning he turned us around and led me back home and we'd only gone to the end of the road. normally he loves being out and has 40 mins in the morning and 40 mins in the evening. hes not bothered this afternoon either. normally hes dashing about around this time desperate to go out but instead hes moping around in his collar looking sad and sorry for himself. I know he cant do too much because of his stitches.
I know we did the right thing getting him done but at the moment i feel really bad for him and im hoping this is just a temporary change. How long before he starts to get back to his normal happy self? We are seeing the vet for a post op check a week on friday.

hello ,mon1o,
I am sending your dog a hug from my cat.He had to have his nose tissue removed last year, i can still feel the awful guilt taking him and when I picked him he literally jumped into my arms and purred into my neck.He was very poorly for a couple of days and the first night he was home, he had me awake like a new born, he just wouldnt leave my side and kept lying on me in bed.I would think that maybe another couple of days until he back fully on his paws, i bet you have told him that you did it cos you love him, still doesnt stop us feeling awful though does it.hope hes better soon. xmum "e" to the most perfect girl :Awho stood by me through it all nana to my beautiful grandson WLM 27.09.13:j

Both my dogs recovered very quickly. In about 2 days i would say. My Staffie X was worse than my rottie in the sense that you wouldn't really have known he had been done! Trying to keep him calm and stopping him from jumping up was a nightmare. xx0

Awww bless, I had my Topsy done a few weeks back, he felt very sorry for himself for a week, the worst was the day after op, he ended up with a slight temp and had antibiotics.
I like u felt really really guilty, I spent the day in floods of tears thinking i'd caused so much pain to my dog.
We were advised not to walk him for a day or 2 but because of his temp we were told to leave it a few more days.
We had a 3 day check and a 10 day check up. They were the norm at our vets, we also had a 5 day check because of his temp.
BUT
Within a week, he was bouncing around and as i type now, he is happily curled up asleep at my feet.
We haven't noticed much difference yet, they say it takes up to 2 months to see much difference, he is scenting less though.
Your dog will be okay, Topsy had shakes when I picked him up, probably from the shock of it all.

The pathetic routine lasted my dog a couple of days (about a week of forlorn looks every time he stuck his tongue down for a slurp of his nadgers and found they weren't there). What was more pathetic was the cat's reaction - the look of triumph as we returned dogless from leaving him at the vets for the op, then the look of utter outrage when we returned with him later that day!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

Thank you all for your replies.
Lady marmalade - I'm trying my best to keep him calm. He's a quiet dog anyway until a toy comes out that is. As soon as he hears the squeak of his ball that's it he's away. So it's confiscated for now - another thing he's annoyed at I think!
Toniq - yes Levi was shaking too when I picked him up for around 4 hours but he's not done it at all today. After this morning I just walked him in the front and back garden this afternoon and he's seemed happy enough with that. Not going to push him anymore.
Dizzi - ha how I chuckled at your post! The poor cat! my sister has a cat such a regal creature he would be most put out if she got another pet lol.
The good thing is he appears to have accepted the collar (after walking into walls, door frames and the coat stand on an attempt to get it removed - he knew what he was doing because when we didn't take it off after the 4th head butt he didn't do it anymore!) he's now curled up on the sofa next to me watching "it's me or the dog"

My dog was quite poorly for about a week after he was neutered, he was really sulking too! He didn't want to go for walks, just moped around looking sorry for himself.Slimming World - 3 stone 8 1/2lbs in 7 months and now at target :j0

TBH I think its the lampshade that makes them miserable more than the op.
I took them off mine and just watched them like a hawk. A couple of days of looking round wondering where he left his bits and he will be fine again

Right no more feeling guilty or sad for him, its done now and he needs you to be your normal self around him. Pandering to his 'whimpy' behaviour is actually praising him for acting like that ... not what you want so act normal from now on

Oh and a massive well done you for being a responsible dog owner and having them off :T:beer:Ant. :cool:0 -
As ant above said, DO NOT show your guilt to him, you can feel guilty all you like but around him you MUST act normally, tell him off for the normal things, make him move out your way, not jump up, no treats from your plate etc. etc. whatever is normal routine for you. He'll perk up much quicker if he knows all is well in your house and there's nothing he should be worrying or upset about.
We had our boy done last year, only change was as we were coming out of the vets he growled at another dog aggressively (never been aggressive in any way), must have been feeling really vulnerable the poor guy, fine after that and a bit groggy for a day or so.Trev. Having an out-of-money experience!
C'MON! Let's get this debt sorted!!0 -
my barney was back to his normal self after about 2 days of feeling sorry for himself after being neutered0
