Hi Nessie216 - I was a little worried initially about putting them together but they get on just great - the rabbit is always licking the guinea clean and they always sit together even though they have quite a big cage & run. I buy dry food for rabbits & also dry food for guineas but I do put it all mixed in in one bowl. Do you think that is ok? Re your comment about guineas not being able to produce vit c - surely no animal can "produce" it? It's just that guineas can not retain it in their bodies as long as rabbits - hence why they need it much more regularly.

Not sure on the exact biology - but guineas (like humans) cannot 'produce' vitamin C and require additional in their diet - but rabbits don't have that need - if you google guinea diet it will say they need additional vit C

Hence the reason why guineas & rabbits shouldn't live together because their diets are so different

The other reason why they shouldn't live together is that the rabbit has really strong back legs and a tendancy to kick out - bearing in mind the guinea has really delicate frame - it is not advisable

I also have heard of the guinea being vicous to the rabbit - so many stories, hence why i don't like the thought of them being in together

If they are fine - it shouldn't be a problem

RE the Vit C - it may be worth investing in another water bottle and the Vit C liquid to put in the water - better to be safe than sorry!

Picked up couscous, pearl barley, painkillers and salad leaves. Updated signature.

I have been very good. There is a new Waitr@se which opened yesterday, so I popped in for the bits. They had so much stuff that looked exciting, but I was very strict with myself :A. In fact I only spent £1.59 in there! But the local m&S are giving out money off vouchers. £5 off a £25 spend in the food hall, one a week for the next six weeks. I don't ever go in m&S but I may do some sums on line and see if its to my benefit. Does anyone know of any good deals or loop holes? I wondered if this is a voucher that teSC0 would honour? Thanks for any help. x

My budget is disappearing fast.... but I have kept track of every penny which is a first for me in many many months.

Not only have I itemised the date, shop and spend, but I have broken it down even further so come the end of the month, I will know how much has been spent on alcohol, bread, spuds, fruit etc, etc.

Since I updated my signature yesterday, I have been shopping again and now I only £80.15 left from a budget of £372.00  This is not as bad as it seems though because this budget includes everything I have bought so includes for example and in no particular order, phone credit, avon toiletries, book from smiths (half price), magazines, clothes on offer in sainsburys and other random items which really should come from a different budget.

My absolute bargain of the day and which has been mentioned in its own thread is that I got 8 x 187ml bottles of red for £5.00 odd when they usually retail at £2.49 each (from Mr T). This is because if you buy 4 bottles, you save a fiver (so 4 bottles for £5) but because its the 25% off wine promotion (when you buy more than 6) then 8 bottles of red mean an absolute bargain and one happy (flat) eric :D

I was going to have a home delivery tomorrow but for the few items I actually need, I find myself adding items to my basket that I don't really need. There are many food options in my fridge and freezer and I can make do. Its still very tempting though

Just added up total for last month £50.45 on fresh food for 8 guineas & rabbit

Normally buy spinach, kale, celery, spring greens (fantastic buy @ mr t - pack for ~ 97p but you have to cut up yourself!), cucumber if on offer, carrots, peppers, sweetcorn (normal or baby), apple, parsley if on offer, sprouts (if in season & not too many!)

Also give them any bits of my food i won't eat e.g. broccoli stalk, little bit too ripe bananas, outer leaves of cabbages, any fruit that won't last! e.g. if i buy a punnet of grapes that i don't fancy any more (all good intentions of eating them when i buy them!:rotfl:)

I try as much as possible to get the reduced veg - but making sure it isn't bad iykwim - if it doesn't look fit for human consumption they don't eat it! (DH has OCD and cuts everything up in little pieces for them! :rotfl:)

    Spend ~ £20 every 2/3 months on p@h nuggets (10kg)

I scrounge off neighbours/family/work for newspapers, i get my wood shavings free from a mate from his work, hay i buy in horse size bales @ ~ £4-7 each

Also growing my own veg for them! Whole raised bed dedicated to them!

If you have the space, i would reccommend buying in bulk - especailly the hay - dry food not so sure as the vitamins depreciation - bedding especially - depending on what you use of course!

P.S. nothing is cheaper than letting them be lawnmowers!
Sorry for lurking, I have 5 piggies and they can cost a fortune, I buy a huge bag of redigrass from the local pet store I know countrywide stock it, it costs £8.50. It is labelled as horse food. It lasts ages they love it and it is good for their teeth. I have tried all sorts of bedding but find the pets at home hay is best, they often have a buy two get one free with free delivery and I stock up then. They eat allsorts dont they? and I love the way they all have their own favourite nibbles.
I dont know if you have seen these pages but the late Peter Gurney wrote lots of books on the care of guinea pigs and his web site is brill http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/index.html

Have to add £9, as went to Mr T's for the cheap dishwasher tablets, and DD chose some donuts, chocolate and i got some cheap nuts and milk. Worked out that I will have enough dishwasher tablets for 1 year 10 weeks, using 10 per week. May look for some more tomorrow, two years supply will be great. Keep the faith all!!!
