Supper tonight was magic! Lightly baked cod covered with grated zest, chopped parsley and chives from the garden with steamed asparagus (present from a neighbour) and new pots. Fresh fruit for dessert. The cod was expensive but well worth it. It was the best meal I've eaten for months!

Our local T$sco has just extended it opening hours to midnight, so I went along about 10ish tonight. Well what a mistake that was. Had to push my way through the aisles as they were full with the trolleys used to restack the shelves. Then when I'd finished, there was no-one on the checkouts. So I had to put my entire shop through the self scan machines. All £75.36 of it . I won't bother going at that time again....so much for convenience, it took me 20mins to put the shopping through. I did get some eggs reduced to 10p a box though, so I got 4 boxesLBM Dec 10. planning on going to the local market this morning. They start up at about 6am so I'll prob head over before going to sleep (naughtly me but got caught up reading again). Might even unpack the rest of my boxes before I go... not very likely.
I'm aiming to get in a range of things, but the markets a bit pants (1 fruit and veg man, one meat van, a general bin bags and cheap cakes, and a pet food man - that's the whole thing) so I might end up having to go to tesco's.
I want to buy
smoothie fruit to portion up and freeze (1 melon, 4/6 kiwi, 1/2 pineapple, 6 pear, 4 rubarb, 6/8 peaches, 6 apricots and some rasberries)
what I really want is a watermelon, but tesco don't stock them yet and there's no chance the fruit man will have one - not to mention how expensive they are, but to me they're the taste of summer.
a dozen bananas for banana and custard desert in the week and for smoothie and maybe banna cake or muffins if elderly
2/300g green beans (for with chicken)
1 broc (soup and the odd bit in the smoothies)
1/2kg carrots (roast with chicken or soup or boiled)
500g parsnips (roast and soup)
4/6 sweet pots (sweet pot mash)
1 leek (green bits in soup and white in a future shepards pie)
4/6 mixed red/yellow peppers (pepper pizza is lovely and the weathers starting to warm up enough that my dough will rise, plus sliced pepper cooks well from frozen)
for with meals
bunch spring onions or chives
1 cucumber
for tuna and mackrel sandwedges and omlettes
then cabbage
2 apple
1 onion
for making some slaw
so we'll see how I go the market tends to be seasonal so he won't have it all for sure- tesco quotes me at about £20, but i don't want to order another delivery and pay more shipping costs, so we'll have to see.
as there's only me, basically it all will be divided up and prepared for freezing to be used as needed in the future.
oh, and I'd like some beetrootOne of the hardest of all life lessons is this:

ok, mixed results at the market.
bought cabbage, leek, broc, 6 carrots, 4 parsnips, spring onions, 3 peppers, 2 punnets strawberries, 6 necterines, 6 pears, cucumber, handful broad beans, handful peas
total £12
Also got given a large handful of (I know msg full) lamb sauce/marinade from the meat man for free - not good for me, but I love it and don't have lamb often. According to him it will keep a good 12 months and I've got enough there for 4-6 good size joints.
happy. Now maybe sleep time then weighing up if I really want a melon and how to adjust my meal ideas. One of the hardest of all life lessons is this:

I visited the local supermarket on Monday and followed my list ! which meant no browsing of the aisles and no picking up of stuff I didn't need or want unlike Thursday when I had time to kill so found myself browsing then buying two magazines and my visit yesterday when I wanted probably £10 worth of stuff but browse browse browse and £39 poorer I find myself.
I'm not too disheartened though - I just need to reign in and not allow myself to lose the plot for the rest of the month. Will update my signature later.
Out of interest, I bought some feta cheese which had a use by date of July but once opened it says you need to use it within 3 days - this isn't going to be possible for me. I have put it in one of those lock n lock boxes so I am hoping this will keep it (fresh?) but in any event, will it be fine to eat after 3 days?0 -
flat eric can you freeze some of it? i freeze chedder type cheeses but not sure re feta , im sure someone on here will be able to help
