Sorry for the slightly offtopic question but has anyone ever worked in a argos stores? Apart from the couple of people at the till thing what do the staff actually do? (I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend whose trying to get a job at a argos store but the application form doesn't tell him what jobs there are! or descriptions etc)

There are various positions in the stores. I worked for Argos 3 seperate times (last time was over 12 years ago, mind you!)
When I worked for them, you could be doing something different each day.
Tills
Customer service till
Back counter handing over goods
Shop Floor (Security / filling pens etc)
Picking (in the storerooms)
The joys of Xmas temping - staff discount, xmas party..... still firends with one of the girls I had an acquaintance with at one of those parties!!!
To say they do nothing is a bit harsh (although sometimes I feel like it I've waited in a store for 25 minutes for an item and there's been only a few people in the blasted place!)Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.0 -
Staff can be rota-ed (sp?) on several different departments. In my store they are:
-Elizabeth Duke (the bling bling dept!) - serving customers, counting stock, doing deliveries etc
- the collection points - handing out the items to the customer
- the tills
- the stockroom - picking the items, putting away deliveries, counting stock
- customer services
- cash office and admin office
- salesfloor (doing displays, looking after quick pay etc)
- Furniture (currently in our store, not sure how many other stores they will be rolling it out to.
Permanent staff are expected to be fully trained on every department and can be on a different department every day. Temps can be trained throughout the store as well but the later they are employed, the less they will be trained and tend to end up in the stockroom or on collection.0 -
The staff work really hard for their money (mostly)! The only lazy job was the Comart - who remembers them?!!!!!:p0

the first 2 answers cover everything! I was a christmas temp 8 years ago (oh my god it was actually that long ago!!!!)
best of the jobs was the elizabeth duke counter (less hassle), or the till (you got to sit down all day then, now they got new tills expect it would be the worst!) followed by the stock room (no customers in your face!) the worst was the collection counter (being faced with all the stressed customers!)
edit: forgot about the pen filling!!finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!0 -
Lizzie Duke is my favourite - obligatory cos I'm an ED teamleader! Nice little mix up of customer interaction and stock-y stuff to do. I found the bit about 'less hassle' funny - Ive had my store manager on my back today, been sworn at by two customers (over stuff that I have no power or control over but hey..), had the most amazingly long queue of customers all day, trying to train three xmas temps...oh and doing it all with a hangover after the xmas party! Yay!
Roll on tomorrow, lets do it all over again...0 -
