Ceramic Hobs - any good or to be avoided?

Can't use large oven in cooker because door doesn't shut properly so food just doesn't cook :exclamati

Going to buy new one - got to be electric cos no gas near cooker point - looked at ceramic hobs but not sure about it  - are they are they ok or waste of time?

Anyone else got/had one?

    Hi Mics_Chick,

You should get more help with this on the In My Home board, so I'll move your thread over there.

  • We've had one for the past 9 years and it's fine.
So easy to clean and maintain.
Although you are limited to the type of pans you can use on the top, most will specify that they 'aren't auitable for use on a ceramic hob', but we've had a stainless steel set for years and never had any problems.

My late mother had one for several years until she died.

    She never complained about it.

If you can stretch a little further, why not consider a halogen hob? They provide instant heat and are safe from the moment they're turned off.

I have one in a property I let out and the tenant who had it first thought it was brilliant. It has touch controls on the top surface.

Thanks Hugo :T with young kids a halogen hob seems ideal - I'll look into it.

good ceramic hobs are great, very controllable and with touch controlls very easy to clean. Beware of cheapies as they can have very poor performance. the top of the range hobs are induction hobs, they generate no heat themselves and you can do the boil the pan with the 20 quid note underneath, however they will warm the pan and that will radiate heat back to the hob, even though the hob itself does not warm up, when there is no pan on the ring there is no power. these can be quite safe but generally quite expensive.
I dont think halogen hobs are safe the moment you switchthem off
  • I have a Zanussi halogen hob which is great - very easy to clean - not quite the degree of control that you have with gas but infinitely better than the old sealed plate hobs. IMO it is worth it from the ease of cleaning perspective alone. They are definitely NOT safe to touch for several minutes after switch off though.
  • For most things you will be fine BUT if you use a wok regularly you might not like a ceramic. The fancy ones turn themselves down when the reach a given temperture which is fine if you want to simmer but if you want to use a wok be aware.

My advice is always: if you enjoy cooking, go the extra mile to get gas!

for pbradley if you are a ceramic and wok fan kuppersbusch do a specfic wok 'hollow' hob with pan included, the best of both worlds. I agree with ajbaker, even though I have fancy induction, for the best cooking performance I like gas. If you want easier cleaning look at gas on glass hobs
