Around here, a vast majority of those who ride horses also are members of the hunt. They see us ordinary folk as something that they wipe off the bottom of their shoes. They blame us for spoiling their fun; those are the ones who no longer hunt. Those who do (illegally), are even worse. They think they are above the law; but what can you expect from a bunch of over-privileged snobs, who treat the village residents as their own personal serfs. Especially when they have the apparent protection and support of the local Chief Superintendent.

Ah yes the good old fox hunters ..... when i was a delivery driver, i had a delivery to do down some 'country roads' ...the local hunt had decided that as they were going to chase poor foxy over buckinghamshire, that they would take over the rds in that particular area ....... bloomin horses everywhere people waving at me to stop, me i just kept on going (not quickly i hasten to add) i was not going to let them tell me what rd i was going to use.

am I missing something here ?

horse kicks car ,dents it and the question is why should we pay for repairs ??

next time keep horse in field where they belong

that's my view on it .

I could not agree more. If one damages my car, they'll pay up or wish they'd simply taken it to the glue factory.

    Well said, Roy.

These nasty beasts should be in the field or on the plate. I hate to see them on the road. This is the 21st century, not the 19th. Pardon the pun but the law is an ass when it comes to horses on the public highway.

The law lords in Mirvahedy v Henley struggled to decide, for the purposes of establishing liability, whether a horse is a domesticated animal or a wild animal (ferae naturae).

The French have the right idea: the horse is considered livestock.

I don't care either way. Eaten them cooked and raw. If someone was exercising their pet gerbil and it damages my car they'll pay or I'll sue.

And the driver who first of all blasted his horn, while inches from the rear of a horse on a single track road, was driving responsibly? He was upstanding and responsible when he threatened to batter a 14 year old boy, and have his horse put down? These days, I'd do much more than just ride off into the sunset if he did that.

Respect begets respect. I'll do my damndest to let people by, but I expect courtesy in return.

    I don't believe a word of it.

If this had happened, I am sure you would have mentioned it.

if...there is insufficient width of carriageway available to pass [overtake....one and the same thing]....allowing the requisite amount of room , then the passing vehicle's speed should be reduced accordingly whilst passing.

simple solution, ask anybody learning to drive a lorry.....move close, slow down......move away, speed up...

If there is absolutely no room to pass, then wait until there is.

    .

And that's exactly the point I was making, but the word overtake suggests speed, pass suggests the vehicle being passed is staionary or slow moving. Some degree of thought has to used with the interpretation of the highway CODE, ;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

If the road is not wide enough for horses, it's not wide enough for cars ;)
I refer you to the Highway Code.

I live in a rural area and quite often come across horses being ridden side by side even on country 'B' roads making it extremely difficult to pass giving a wide berth. How do you go about this? You can't exactly blow your horn at them and if you 'politely' point out their 'irresponsible' road use as you slowly drive past (when you can), more often than not, you get a 2 finger salute! I note that on these occasions, the horses are nearly always being ridden by women who are enjoying a gossip while slowly plodding along.
    PLEASE NOTE

I have noticed this recently by me and tends to be in the mornings on my way to work.
Also seeing a lot of cyclists doing the same

How much of a gap did the driver give the OP's daughter's horse?

    Not enough!

Would somebody like to define what 'too close' is? It is only the OPs opinion that the driver was too close, OPINION!

Is 4 feet to close? On some country roads in my area that is the maximum clearance that is possible unless the rider is in the hedge.

I was wondering that. I meet a lot of horses on local roads & I always drive on the other side of the road. But even doing that I can only be 4 foot away from them.

"The Highway Code advises that riders never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on busy or narrow roads and when riding round bends."

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/horse-rider-liability/

Maybe it should be single file & save riding 2 abreast for bridal paths.
