Hullomail - email voicemail will be free - listening to voicemail on phone will use your standard call allowance.

I did see Hullomail but that seems to require a smart phone, I would rather not spend alot on a handset I'll not be using.

Now mobile could be what I need. Does anyone have experience with them?

It does not require an app or a smart phone.
  • With Hullomail you pay for the diverted part of the call. Therefore it isn't really free - you need credit on the phone. If this isn't a problem it's a good solution - they can even forward your voicemail messages to email so you can listen to them over and over.

Are you accessing voicemail on another account or on the phone account you are calling from? I've seen people on giffgaff use a partner's phone to pick up their own voicemail by making use of free giffgaff to giffgaff calls.

Do any of the networks offer free voicemail retrieval anymore?

Free voicemail is available with TalkMobile Pay As You Go Rewards tariff.

Standard calls are 25p. Standard texts are 10p. Voicemail is FREE.
You can top up just £5 at a time.
You can choose a top up reward deal - either free texts or minutes valid for a certain amount of time after each top up.
(eg a £5 top up can get you unlimited texts for the next 7 days, etc)

You will need to make a chargeable call/text once every 180 days to keep the account active.

The phone will have little to no credit on it and just be used to check voice mails daily. Stuart's solution looks like the best.

    Thanks all.

My phone is with Virgin and so is hubby's and neither of us get charged for listening to voicemail. This is one thing I check when doing a new phone.

Since July 2010, for new customers Virgin have charged for voicemail. It's currently 13p/min for contract customers and 26p/call for PAYG customers (Virgin Media customers may be on the 8p tariff). You need to stay on a legacy/retention deal to retain free voicemail.
