Manufacturers typically slap a year's warranty on most white goods. But the 'warranty' is a bit of a red herring, anyway. As a consumer you're covered by the SOGA. This will protect you for a 'reasonable period' (up to six years depending on item/cost of item) and during that period you're entitled to a refund (possibly partial), replacement or repair if your goods aren't satisfactory. In the first six months after purchase, any fault is deemed to be inherent so you won't even need to prove you didn't cause the problem yourself. All of this is free, governed by legislation and separate to any warranty you may have, bought or otherwise.
BTW, the contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer, so if your fridge (or whatever) does go wrong, go back to the retailer, not the manufacturer."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

The overwhelming likelihood is that NOTHING will go wrong in those five years.
Agreed. I've had mine for 10 years. Plus it was my friend's before that and he'd had it for a fair few years already. Oh, actually I tell a lie. Something did go wrong with it... the light bulb needed replacing."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

£90 for a light bulb ? some people might think that is good value .......:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
I bought a warranty on a new (well new to me) car I purchased just 6 weeks ago, I splashed out on a three year warranty thinking I was protecting myself for the future. Guess what, the garage has gone bust and the warranty even though I thought it was with a third party company is now null and void, any suggestions (other than not to be stupid
) Thanks

I feel that everybody should get extended warranties except me, that way everything I buy will be cheaper0

I agree. In fact, my subliminal messages will have worked on you all (except shortchanged, who is obviously a Comet spy).
I will look forward to seeing you all at work tomorrow as you come to buy cover on everything you have ever owned

I totally agree, it's bad value.
But then, conversely you could say, that (amongst other things) having a £500 repair on an oven, £800 car repair, £150 VHS repair, £200 washing machine repair; all for a small fee has been well worth it (and they are all coming from family/personal experience)
Yet, I have never had to utilise car insurance, building insurance contents insurance or holiday insurance..
It's a personal thing, and the risks one is willing to take.
I think your post is a perfect example of the tactics used by some of the "white goods" sellers. Sell cheap, poor quality equipment with expensive additional warranties; they will go wrong, people will claim, same people will say how good it is , more people will buy.............brilliant, self perpetuating !
YOU are building in the extra risk yourself..........even more brilliant.........and you are paying even more for that ...........absolutely superb ..........
I honestly can say that we have not had a domestic machine failure since we had a rubbish Hoover washing machine in about 1980 - J Lewis replaced it in the end. Guess what make we have NEVER bought since ?
Buy decent stuff and treat it properly........0 -
