what do you all do regarding extended warranties?
I spend the money on some bottles of plonk ! If you don't drink, put the money you would have spent on these "warranties" into the Building Society and after a few years you can afford to go to Florida for a fortnight.
These things are a waste of money..........0 -
I would never buy an extended warranty, just not worth it. Imagine how much you will spend if you buy one on every product you buy. Not to mention I don't have a lot of faith in the in the ability of the companies to do the repairs.0

Maybe compare with other suppliers.
For example, John Lewis has a fridge freezer at £199 with a two year guarantee included.
To extend the warranty to five years costs £60.
Details here.0 -
Quick note on Dixons/Currys extended warranty on Fridge Freezer is a extra £690

wow? really..
I know that warranties used to cost around 2/3 the price of the item, but i would have thought that a 5 yr one for £90 was ok?
You have no idea of reliability engineering I am afraid.
If you wish to throw away £90, please feel free, but the likelihood of your fridge/freezer breaking down is minimal. If it is going to fail it is most likely to happen in the first year or when it is over 10 years old.
I am 65 and have had a fridge all of my married life and a freezer for much of it. I have NEVER had one fail in all those years.
I can almost guarantee that there will now be a number of posts saying that their whole life has been blighted by failed refrigeration equipment - but there won't be many posts from the millions of people, like me, who have never had a problem ..................0 -
In 37 years we are on our
2nd fridge
4th washine machine
2nd freezer
3rd vacuum cleaner (2nd one still in use, bought a better one)
Fitted oven / hob 25 years
Self insure, put the money you would pay for the warranty in a savings account. If all the appliances you bought failed you would be out of pocket but what are the chances of that ? Same with the dentist, after 5 years we are £1500 up on their monthly dental plan !!0 -
I'd say it depends what you get from the warranty. If it just extends the same guarantee for another 4 or 5 years, then I wouldn't pay all that much. If it adds on other things, like frozen food cover, or guaranteed service levels, like for like replacement or more useful things, then maybe a bit more.
As we're talking about them, I do have my fridge covered, because it was £80 for 5 years. And for a £200 fridge/freezer, the likelihood is that at some point in those 5 years, it's going to need something doingSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

thanks coolhotcold.. did you find that on their website? i didnt see it anywhere but knew it must have been somewhere
Here you go0 -

But to be honest that's almost half the value of the item again!!!
I would be more inclined to go for a better quality one in the 1st place for say £300 and that would mean not an Indesit or Hotpoint machine by the way.
And also I would expect a fridge freezer to work for at least 3 years trouble free or in my eyes it should not pass the durability test of the SOGA.0 -
If the OP is really that worried, they should maybe read reviews on each of the appliances to identify known issues and avoid certain brands (Hotpoint / Indesit) or flawed products.
I personally have never purchased a extended warranty from the retailer, and never had an issue with electrical items or appliances failing at my expense.
Self insure and take a balanced view on paying lots of money for a feature packed product, and what you need in reality. Repairs of appliances are rarely cheap, and usually a sign of future problems yet to surface. Buying a more expensive item often compels individuals to persist with more and more repairs, to recover there loss of buying an expensive product. In reality they are flogging often a dead horse.
I recall my dad buying a really expensive camcorder when we were younger. It failed and the repair was more than the cost of a new more modern camcorder. My farts hospitalize small children0
