Thinking of buying a SE W850I

All,

Am thinking of splashing out on a sony ericcsson W850 to replace my V3. However I am concerned about the following.

'Always online
Your 3G phone has an ‘always on’ Internet connection with high-speed data transfer. This gives you a fuller mobile Internet experience, making it practical to access large files or use complex remote services, no matter where you are'.

Does this mean the phone can upload or download data at will and therfore go through my PAYG cash??

Can anyone enlighten me as to this feature.

Also I have been on Virgin PAYG and want to stay. The cheapest I have seen this phone in on the Virgin Web for £279 with 45 free airtime, making the phone £234. Anyone know of anywhere cheaper for a sim free phone?

you should be able to turn that feature off

just bear in mind the camera doesn't have autofocus like the w810 does, but the w850 has the ad2p profile so you can listen to your music through a stereo bluetooth headset

Thanks gaming guy. I really want the phone for the mp3 player. I hardly took any photos with the V3 prob cos the camera was rubbish. However I would like a good camera. I was looking at the 810 which is a lot cheaper however i like the large screen and better/larger keypad on the 850. Was also looking at the K800 however have been put off by extra I would have to pay for memory.

I have no idea what this means - I have a W850i, and as far as I know the internet is only accessed when I tell it to. At the least, my bills for the last couple months have only shown up internet time that I've used, and not any mysterious 'always on' internet. I'd call this marketing bumph, or at the very least go to a mobile shop and ask them to display that.

The only way I see it accessing the internet without you telling it to would be to use RSS feeds and tell them to auto update either all the time, or once a day or so on.

Also I've not seen the W850i on PAYG yet anywhere, so good luck finding decent deals...

The camera is good - 2megapixels and good enough to print to 6x4 proper photos without any blurryness or artefacts or problems. Mine came with a 1gigabyte data card, but I'm already looking to get a 2gig card for Xmas. You're realistically gonna get 250 to 500 songs on a 1 gig card. And you can put photos etc on it too.

Thanks Teeb, I got the always online quote from the sony ericcson website for the phone. I'll check with some phone shops however I guess from what you have told me its probably SE sales gimickery.

The fact that the phone comes with a 1 gig card has really swung it for me, as the K800I doesent and uses an expensive type. And as said before, the mp3 player function is the draw and not the camera, glad to know its still ok.

As for finding it on payg, as far as i can see, Virgin are the only crowd to do it. So I guess I'll give them a ring soon and order it.

the w850i is a very good phone. mine is stuffed with mp3's and quality games and videos. i wouldn't say the camera is brilliant, but it does the trick. the mp3 player is fantastic and the earphones you get with the phone are superb - try listening to something with the mega-bass on...top quality stuff!
