  • I think that McVities are being a bit cruel in two ways: (a) by not re-introducing their unique and very tasty version of Tunis Cake, as sold in the 1970s, and which is the only Tunis Cake I'm interested in, and (b) by sending out any old recipe which is highly unlikely to be much like the recipe for the factory made cake.
  • have hit the nail on head...
gonna make a test 1 for her choir raffle... n gauge the reaction...
don`t want 2 make waxy pink icing tho
  • Please do let us know how it turns out, manda.

There must be a market for these cakes if all the big supermarkets have bought them back at one time or another - I wonder why McVities haven't? Saying it is because they no longer make round cakes sounds a bit odd!

Kittie it is interesting that you should of posted that link, as I made Tunis cakes the other day - and I used orange zest rather than the lemon given in the recipe provided in the thread. I just felt orange and chocolate was a bit more Christmassy. They were packed off to DP's workplace and were appreciated anyway - and hence why I made them as individual 'cakes'. Too much faff trying to cut up one big cake. The mix made 18 ordinary muffin sized cakes if anyone is interested.

If my posting technique has caught up with this century, I may even be able to provide a photo.....ummm.......

    Right!

So here it is plain. you can see it has cracked a bit where the oven was probably too hot.

After the chocolate was added. I used Green and Blacks cook's chocolate and added the water the recipe said but it was very thick and hard to spread - I always thought water with choc was a no-no?

And here the choc has set, It is not glossy (I'm sure that's the fault of the water) but does smell divine and looks OK, just a bit rustic!

Hope this helps anyone planning on making one - update to come once it's been tasted!

I wonder if you had used a spoon of oil instead of water would it have been better, or just a teaspoon of oil. The chocolate would have stayed glossy & been easy to spread.
