this is not at the op but more of just a rant about the law here.

Most of you know that I'm from the states and we have very clear laws about age and weight and which way the can sit. Here, there is no law about age and weight other than they have to be in the correct seat. How does that set guidelines that are true and safe?

I even contacted them and he claims that babies have to be a year to sit forward, however, I don't see that anywhere. I have done a lot of research and what I have found is that years ago, the trend was to turn babies forward facing early to make them happy. So the car seat manufacturers followed the trend. I find that sickening! How dare they take our babies safety so out of context just to follow a trend?

I just feel that there is so much misinformation out there and any company that sells carseats should know all the guidelines and put safety first.

If you take a look at the Britax brand in the US and then here, there is a huge difference between styles. I think Britax UK makes one convertible car seat where almost all the models in the states are convertible and they can sit rear facing for the full weight limit of the seat over there. This is a British company, so why can't they do the same????? Following the trend. There are also so many rumours over here that convertible car seats arent even safe and that's why you don't see them. But they have been used in the states for centuries and ARE safe.

I just feel that we as parents really have to speak up for what we feel is safest for our babies and shouldn't let car seat manufacturers dictate that unless it is the law.

sorry I went so far overboard but this is really close to my heart. Just so you all know the law in the states, babies must be at least 1 year old AND 20 pounds, they have to reach both milestone before turning forward.

this isn't aimed at anyone on this post, just an fyi.

My baby girl is 2.5 and because she is still small will stay rear facing till at least 3 if not more. We use a Besafe Izy Isofix and love it. she has so much leg room, her feet don't even touch seat in front of her.

My best advice is to read and learn. Try out the seats if you can. If you have a young baby, keep them rear facing for as long as possible. Even when they outgrow their seats at age 4, look for a seat that is harnessed at a heavier weight and height. They will always be saftest in a harness when forward facing. So, rear face for as long as the seat allows and harness them for as many seats as possible.

I'm so reassured to see sensible car seat advice here. The other day I had to listen to a drunk (childless) friend telling me they had read an article/book which said car seats are a waste of time and it's been shown that the child wouldn't be any safer than just strapped in a seatbelt. I was
"I'm not going to risk my child's life on the basis of some speculative article you read and are recalling to me whilst drunk. T@$t"

Imagine the conversation with the police "oh I'm sorry mr policeman. I know the law days I should haver child in an appropriate seat but my mate down the pub says they don't do anything anyway so I didn't bother buying one."

    Sorry. Off topic rant there.

I'm actually considering getting one of the rear facing seats now, and I actually live quite close to Babyworld Shop, so might go and have a look around.

It's just so frustrating getting such mixed advice from shops who sell the seats, and as I've never seen a rear facing seat other than the newborn baby ones, I didn't even know they existed! Not sure they'll fit in a KA though, and I don't have ISOFIX either.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Have a look at rearfacing.co.uk - they have a list of places that sell rear facing seats.

In case it is any use to anyone a friend of mine has been told that http://www.paulstride.co.uk is getting in a stock of the BeSafe Izi Combi seats in that they will be selling for £200 as they are the X2 (last years version).

Edited to add - they will be the belted version rather than isofix I believe.

I had a belted RF BeSafe Izi in my Ka when I had it.

It is well worth going somewhere where they know and understand rear facing seats. Especially if you are anywhere near a place that holds stock as often if they have stock they'll try and fit it in your car for you to see what fits and what doesn't.

Britwife.. did you see they are trying to make it law that all children under 4 have to be rear facing in the States? is it up to 2 at the moment?

Over here children are still seen as a nuisance rather than the future of the country and their lives are given very little value (check out how much a standard insurance policy will pay out on a childs death!) In other countries they are a joy and a delight.. here they are still to be unseen and unheard.. it is quite disgusting.

Check the Which? report for that seat before you buy it - I don't think it came out very well, which is surprising as it's a Britax!

We have a ford ka and we have just bought the britax first class plus for our baby (due 21/08/11) and this is rear facing and forward facing. The man in mothercare spent ages checking it was ok and making sure it was safe.
