I have a relative who lives out in the sticks. There is a 20 pair cable that runs from a telegraph pole 1/4 mile to a junction box by another house and then 1/2 mile to their property. The broadband look up said they could get 1/2 meg bb so they signed up and all went ahead quickly. The problem is that they cannot access the service. All they get is a flashing bb light on the router, new router @ filters fitted and usb modem tried all with the same problem. They were not even able to get a stable dial up, the connection kept dropping. ISP says problem must be with the line and is not their problem. BT says the line is ok and noise is within limits. Over the years the engineers have changed the pair in use a few times due to bad noise. The other house gets bb ok but I am not sure at what speed. A dongle is out of the question as there is no mobile signal. Where do we go from here ?

Have they tried connecting the router using the Master test socket so as to eliminate any internal wiring problems?
BTW Is it a Router or a USB Modem, make and model please. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Tried the master test socket. The router is a thompson tg585. Also tried my old faithful speedtouch 330 usb modem. No joy. I think the problem is the line as it is mainly overground (20 pair hanging on fence posts etc) but BT say it is ok and she risks a charge if they have to come out. Hopefully the line will be replaced in a couple of months as there is some roadworks being carried out which means the line will need moving.0

Buck passing between the ISP and BT then, the ISP should get BT to investigate, hope it gets sorted. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Update
The contractors decided to start work early and managed to cut the line in a couple of places. BT have been and part replaced / repaired the cable and checked out the several junction boxes along the way emptying loads of water. Voice is now much better than it has been for ages. While there they discussed broadband capability and the engineer said no way as the cable is too long. It seems the other property gets their BB via satellite as it was not possible on the landline, their new shiny dish is not for sky after all. They will now have to get onto the ISP and try to reclaim the money they have been paying for the non existant service.0
