Don't worry, that's totally normal, I've known several cats like that. Some were lazy, some were scared, some were elderly, some were all three! :) The thing is, it doesn't matter if a cat lives in the easiest way for it to, but you can't! No-one is going to bring tasty food home for you and put it out in the dish. No-one will brush your hair. No-one's going to clean your toilet for you. (Well, they might one day far away, but you're not that bad yet, so don't you dare give up!) A cat's simple life might look appealing, but they have the simple brains to go with it, and you don't. It's not healthy for you to live that way and doing so will make you feel worse and worse.
  • In my long experience of owning cats I would say that your cat could not care less whether you are there or not, as long as the bed and food are there. She will most likely just sleep. I think you are transferring your anxieties onto the cat.

I do not think you should take it to the medical (I do not think it would be allowed) or the supermarket.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I have a friend that has a hand reared lamb. The damned animal goes for a walk with her on a lead. Would that be allowed in?

And then there is another friend that has a parrot that sits on his shoulder, I wonder if that would be allowed. Mind you ATOS would get more sense out of the parrot if the results of these assessments are anything to go by!!

I have read this thread and there is alot of mixed bag reactions as to be expected.

I think I can totally relate to what scared45 is saying. I have suffered depression in the past and having my cats around helps a great deal.
Like countryguy, I own 4 cats and one of them was hand reared too! he is 6 yrs old and absolutely daft as a brush, very docile and scared of his own shadow. But he is also very loving and affectionate and just loves to be cradled in my arms like a human baby! staring at me with his 'Puss in Boots' eyes (like the one in Shrek) and all four paws sticking up in the air (yes ok, I know, I am waiting to be sectioned under the mental health act! :p:) ) He is mainly a housecat but however,he does love to go outside sometimes, more so when it is sunny but will not wander off too far and always stays close to our house.

Cats are not just cats, they understand how you are feeling, whether you are up or down and they are not to be underestimated.
Scared45 obviously feels that her beloved cat is her one and only companion at the moment. I understand that. I have been there myself.

Therefore by wanting her cat by her side when she needs to go out somewhere is like having your best friend with you. For most people this will sound rather strange, but when you actually dig deeper there is much more to it. I use to have a mate who took her cat out for a walk on a lead and she got some funny looks, but then you quickly realize it's not so strange and that those leads are actually being sold by pet stores.

So yes, scared45,you could maybe think about buying a lead for her for those times when she wants to go out for a walk outside your flat, then she won't feel as if she is completely alone. Just a thought.
I asked for fork 'andles(handles for forks) not four candles! God Bless The Two Ronnies :T

Thanks, everyone, I must admit in my OP I did just have the idea, 'Can I take my cat to the medical?'

But I've talked a bit about my illness, and the cat, and I think this has helped me, I'm not used to internet forums.

Is there anyone (other than the cat)you can take with you to the medical? Just wondered if it might help with the anxiety?

Yes, I'll try and have someone there with me - if it comes down to a medical.
