My parents took on the care of my late nan in their home and it was terrible watching mum struggle (dad was working at the time, so could only help out late at night), we tried to help all we could but all of us were working in full time jobs and had very little time to spare to take the edge off the pressure during the day, plus I was also heavily pregnant with eldest - I could help out with some appointment running in my lunch hour but both my brother and sister could not drive at that point.

Nan had always said to her children NOT to look after her if she became infirm and to just put her in a home and she kept saying it to my mum when she was trying to care for her and refusing the care (which of course made the caring even harder) but mum thought it was her duty to do so.

For my parents, it was not a financial decision, nan lived in a council house and had only a small amount of savings...they just felt duty bound to do it.

In the end after several months of struggling, mum had to admit defeat and nan was admitted into our lovely little local cottage hospital where she passed away peacefully two weeks later surrounded by her family.
