you should look at the norbreck castle hotel (search Brittania hotels).
We used to stay in premier inn (travel inn) but when our 3rd child came along we needed to move on and norbreck castle done a five bed family room for around the same price as travel inn and it included a buffet breakfast. The trams stop right accross form it (when running).
Like the others have said not much open at Christmas, we normally go around late September and if you keep checking the vistblackpool web site there is normally discounts for the tower and pleasure beach etc.0
