Elderly Mum and Fray Bentos pie tins....

grunnie This happened to me a few years ago and I phoned Fray Bentos to let them know I had problems opening their tins and they sent me a tin opener that has opened their tins easily and is still in use today.:D
Someone did, and got free working tin opener, perhaps you could also write explaining your problems in opening FB tins?Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I have this and it works with anything as long as the tin is not damaged, for most tins it will support the tin on its own, fray bentos pies need to be held

Hi all,
My Mum loves Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pies but has difficulty opening the tins. Sometimes I'm there to help but we're looking for a solution to help her when I'm not around.
Does anyone mind sharing info on what kind of can openers the elderly folk you know use?
We've tried a Magican one that slices the tops off tins (doesn't work)and the normal just cheapo metal one but that is tough to use and tends to miss out bits as well as mangling part of the lid.
I'm just worried she'll cut herself badly one day or give up enjoying the pies.
All advice gratefully received.
Cheers,
Padz

Thanks Fray Bentos - we contacted Premier Foods and they suggested we buy a Brabantia which we did and it works a treat.
They did not at any point mention a free tin opener though.0 -
I don't buy them any more, I get the Goblin microwave ones, they cost a bit more but there's no real risk of harm, and can be cooked in just over a minute.
Did you know.... Fray Bentos is a city in UraguayI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

My Kenwood electric can opener will not open the pie tins.0

No longer Premier Foods - now Baxters (who make delicious soups!)

Try one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kuhn-Rikon-Safety-Lifter-Black/dp/B000I7GST2/
works a treat with Fray Bentos pie tins, corned beef tins where you've lost the key, in fact any tin I've ever tried it with. And no sharp edges on either the tin or the lid.
TK Maxx are cheaper than Amazon (about £7 I think).
We were so impressed with ours we got another for Mrs S's 85 year old mum, who has no problems using it.Stompa0 -
Thx for all the post and info, I got my mum to phone up and kindly ask them for help in opening these god awful tins, she asked nicely and said she was a pensioner struggling to open the tins and she explained she has 2-3 tin openers (metal ones/magican/auto magican) and all failed to open the tins.
However when she called she was told you need to buy a "metal one"
and that she would send a letter with instructions and details on how to do it....
This sounds to me like they are just sending some updated leaflet and not a tin opener ?
I will upload the leaflet or info if they send it to me they quoted 3 weeks however....
I would love to get the kenwood powered tin opener but as reading this thread some say it works and others say it does not.... so not willing to waste £15-20 on it, especially since I have brought 3 tin openers and none of them worked in fact 2 died from the frays tin!
as the above poster to me mentioned a kuhn rikon opener amazon are still the cheapest around 12 quid... I may try this out simply to solve this nagging issue once and for all!0
