It's not a high rise, it's only 3 floors high. It is however solid walls and floors, and I suspect that will make gas significantly more expensive to install. I'll find out though as I have someone coming round to look at it and give me a rough price on it.
There's a lot of spin out there against storage heaters. I'm quite sure there's a lot of people who want but can't get gas because it's not affordable or not available. I think there's people trying to flog electric wall heaters as a replacement for storage heaters that's "the latest thing" and "better than gas". I've taken them all with a pinch of salt.
As for storage heaters being made illegal... there is movement against them, as far as I understand anywhere that has them is rated as "poor" for heating efficiency. And my surveyor was pretty clear that the biggest effect on the value of the flat would be installing gas central heating to replace the storage heaters. I know that at least 3 of the 9 flats in the block already have gas in, so it shouldn't be hugely expensive to draw it from there... I'll find out though and decide then.
For now though it's just a case of studying my bills and working out how to get the controls set just right.0 -
They run on cheap rate electricity so are more economical than other forms of electric heating.
What would you suggest as an alternative if no gas is available.
cheap rate but inefficient at it so lots of it is used.
the alternative is of course gas, the landlord would make it available.0 -
How can you make gas available, Mr. Anderson, if you can't get gas to the property? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

I am not saying its possible for every property but it should be for the ones I have seen, all ground floor with storage heaters. If the landlord were to move into these properties they would probably fit central heating then.
Incidently I got offered a property with no heating at all in one room and storage heaters in others, I offered £80 below the asking price on monthly rent, they haggled me up to £50 below but when I refused to budge I explained why in that the heating costs would be £50 in excess to what I am used to paying, they accepted me but I ended up not taking the place as I felt even £50 wasnt enough to cover the cost as it also had hideous insulation.0 -

We or at least I, was not talking to / or about / you mate [ high rise ] . I was referring to #18 Chrysalis.
