For those giving their experiences and warnings too... thanks.
For those wanting me to go into more detail about why I made the topic...
No, I haven't had a bad day. And the point I'm making is that they are a rip-off and misleading: I haven't said anything about bad experiences.
If you are happy to pay the extra and the unit does what you want - great, it's fine. But this is a "money saving" board, so my "money saving" advice is to buy elsewhere. Ultimately, that's all I'm trying to get across.
I know the thread seems pointless, but I didn't know of any other way of spreading the warning (especially to newbies with PCs) to beware. Sorry if you see no point in it.
The misleading theme of the adverts has already been explained by various members  especially the "you can do two things at once" rubbish
I'm pleased that so many people agree :j
Thanks.0 -

So did Which? magazine when this was discussed a few weeks back
PC World going the same way as M&S 5 years back, when suddenly everyone woke up to what a naff place to shop it had become?0 -

Picked up a nice, unmarked, returned to base, not required, cheap laptop recently.
My brother wanted of take it off "my hands" at the time. That shows to me it was a good bargian if he was trying to encourge me to sell it to him!! :rotfl: :rotfl:
So in other words you have got a bargain cheap laptop from them.... Your right they must have really conned you.. Seems a bit much to be slagging of a store that you use to get bargains from... I too have bought cheap stuff (mainly games and peripherals) but wouldnt buy a full system, but my main gripe is the staff. I just wouldnt buy a computer from anybody who knows less than my 14Month old daughter, and that goes for any retailer no matter how cheap..0 -

This is in fact true but not for what they say... It means you can run things like video encoding/decoding software and also do other power hungry stuff like play games or run other video editing software as well..
Its not that the "do two things at once" is wrong its just the Surf and play games is.. But I suppose the majority of people wont want a PC with dual cores if they dont have to do a lot of power hungry stuff like video editing0 -

Only my opinion, but can I suggest that if your intention was to help the uninitiated, then there are more appropriate boards to post on.SteveCutler wrote:The misleading theme of the adverts has already been explained by various members
I'm not entirely sure that they do deliberately try to mislead, and that appeared to be the crux of your original post, i.e. that they were being dishonest in some way. More likely that the advertising copy was written by a less than technically-minded marketing hack.
So though you're adamant that you haven't had a bad day, at least your second post has a more relaxed, rational feel to it. Now that you've settled down, have a drink. :beer:0 -
PC World aren't too bad for things like printers and the like, but I would never even consider buying (or recommend that someone else buy) a PC from them. They sell cheap, nasty, outdated and unreliable makes. It's far better to get one from a reputable mail order supplier or get someone you know who's a PC guru to build you one. Or buy a Mac if you're that way inclined. You can do much better than PC World, even if you're a novice.
One aspect of PC World I especially do not like (aside from the fact that they have huge signs that say "handheld's" (no apostrophe, please!)) is their tune-up service (I forget its name). You pay them a load of money to run Adaware and to defragment your hard drive, a task done by someone with no real experience and no qualifications, who can see all your confidential files and documents.0 -
We meet again Mr Vega.
(When can we expect your next movie?)VincentVega wrote:PC World aren't too bad for things like printers and the like ...
A few months ago, I went to one of their stores to buy a particular Canon printer for which they had a special one-day deal on. I'd already decided that it was that particular model that I was going to buy, and it was pure good fortune that the offer came up.
That branch had run out of their stock, and the hard sell that I got, just to buy an Epson, was horrendous. The satisfaction I got from asking him to check the stock at the next nearest branch, which was only twenty minutes away, was great. I went there; He got no sale.VincentVega wrote:One aspect of PC World I especially do not like (aside from the fact that they have huge signs that say "handheld's" (no apostrophe, please!))
Someone after my own heart.
