cant you just widen the drive upto the hydrant plate?
if need be, then move the sign 6 - 12 inches to the left. im sure no one will ever discover its been moved. by you.

I've considered that but what's not shown in the pictures is that behind the wall there is a front lawn. I'd like to completely remove the wall and the lawn to allow an extra parking space. I think if I removed only a section of the wall not only would it look a bit odd, but I also wouldn't be able to have an extra parking space on the drive.

If you do the land registry search as I mentioned it will show you your boundaries, I would imagine upto the footpath is your property and edge of your boundary, so the Hydrant would be on your property.

However do not move the hydrant sign until FB have been informed, I would imagine somewhere down the line there will be some law and regulations for them which you could find yourself in a whole heap of trouble if you moved it without permission.

Thanks, I'll do a land registry search and find out.

I'm definitely not prepared to move the sign without permission first.

our fire people paint the hydrant plaques regular, they also send a bloke out to flush them every once in a while, one obviously hasnt been done. go down your nearest station and have a word, as for the markings, looking at the distance you want it moved, reckon it would stay the same.

That's a good point. This property has been in the family since the early 70's and apparently the fire service used to paint it and flush it out every so often. However, they haven't checked it for many years now so it may not even be active/working. It'll be interesting to see what my fire service has to say about it.

There was a fire hydrant sign outside my frontage. When I built the house it was removed so that lorries could get onto the site. It has never been replaced and is still in the front garden, more than 33 years later, no-one has ever queried its absence. I would imagine that the fire brigade has maps that show where hydrant access is to be found. The concrete markers are probably just belt and braces.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I have an update for anyone interested.

I sent an email to my local Fire and Rescue service explaining that I wanted to have the hydrant sign moved and today I received a letter in the post from the "Fire safety inspector" who has confirmed that they have no objection to me removing the fire hydrant sign providing that "care is taken in doing so as it may be reused". I've been asked to contact the Water Services Department once it has been removed so that they can visit the site to reposition it or provide an alternative means for alerting crews to the location of the hydrant. :T

The letter was hand delivered so he obviously checked it out himself which is good.

I will now be writing to the council to confirm that I don't need any permission to widen the entrance and to make sure it's all OK before finally going ahead with it. :)

You mean the OP shouldv've just removed the sign? So when the fire brigade come to put out a fire in a house nearby they have absolutely no indication of where the nearest hydrant is? So they waste precious time searching for it and someone dies?
  • Hi I have a similar problem. I have a fire hydrant stone bright yellow thing in my front garden plus on path outside house right next to hydrant a yellow thing which is a metal covered hydrant and a yellow painted Curb. I would like to get rid of the one in the garden so that we can put a drive in. Do you think this is at all possible. Help needed..

  • :T I have just had a drop kerb fitted and in the process of removing the hedges and I came across 2 fire hydrant signs. I contacted my local fire station (internet search engine) they rang the water board and the reply was "If you're happy to remove them then go ahead, give us your address and we'll get someone out to come and place another sign on your nearest lamp post / wall detailing where the hydrant is."

    Hope this helped!
