Upgraded to 50mbps on Virgin but get nowhere near that

I was on their XL 20mbps service and had a letter offering me a free upgrade to their new 30mbps service if I resigned for 12 months. When I called with a view to taking them up on this deal, they offered me a free upgrade to their 50mbps package for 6 months then an extra £5 for 6 months afterwards. All installed on Wednesday, but ever since then, I have been getting frequent drops in wireless signal (old D-Link N router was a weaker signal strength but never dropped out) and my speeds have never gotten above 26mbps at very best, more like the 4-6mbps most of the time. Now as much as I am not paying for the upgraded speed at the moment, I still don't feel I am getting the service I was promised ie faster speeds and more reliable wireless connection on their superhub. Over an hour on the phone to their indian tech team has left me losing the will to live and still no further forward. Anyone any ideas?

The reason you are'nt seeing the 50Mbit is because you are connecting wirelessly. I have Wireless N running at the full 300Mbit and I rarely see transfer rates much above your's by the time I've enabled WPA2 security and made a couple of other tweaks.

If you want the full 50Mbit at your machine, then you'll have to hardwire it to the Superhub.

Thanks KillerWatt, I feel really cheated now, the agent on the phone never once mentioned this, despite my asking over and over about the increased wireless strength on the superhub. Does this then mean, that with the 30mbps connection, I would indeed still get about 26mbps? I have effectively been conned into taking the 50mbps service when I have no hope of ever getting that on a wireless connection.

I doubt anyone from VM made the promise that your wireless devices will exchange data at the full 300 Mbits, their sales blurb is that you get a 50Mbit service and a wi-fi router that is N capable (and that's what you have).

After upgrading and receiving a new super duper Virgin hub i had been experiencing the same problems as yourself. Went out and bought my self a new router and used the old Virgin modem and everything is perfect.
TBH anything more than 20/30 mb is not really needed unless you are constantly downloading DVDs - ask to downgrade back and save some dosh!

Same issue using wireless, upgraded to a higher speed network card, job done

so, after some investigation I have found I have a "g" wireless adapter built into my laptop, so this would explain why I am only getting 4/5 meg speeds, so, will be investing in an N wireless USB adapter. I am not an internet wizz so I had no idea that wireless would reduce the speed so much. Will get on to VM and reduce the package to 30 meg instead.

You should have got one free from virgin, call them up to get one sent out

thanks JB66 did just that and yes I should indeed have had one free, arrived today, average speed is approx 36mbps:T

Unfortunately the superhub keeps powering off and it's reset itself to default settings a few times so they're seding an engineer out tmrw

Mine did too, changing the speed of wireless from 300 to 145 cured it for me.

Might boost your speed too
