Watching HD with a Freeview box?

This may seem a dumb question, but if I got a HD Freeview box and connected it to a NON-HD Tv could I get HD Tv?
I do know there are no hdmi slots on the tv.
Just wondering whether its worth paying a bit extra than the £25 for a basic Grundig one which is what I intended to do?
Don't want to splash out on a built-in freeview tv just yet.

Then suggest you wait and get a set with built in Freeview HD. This is rapidly becoming standard on new TV's as the digital switchover continues. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yes.
You will get the Freeview HD and SD channels; having the HD may give you a few additional programme choices and the image quality may be better because of the higher bandwidth.
However the TV - and the pictures you see - remains SD.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Are you considering changing your TV soon? We bought a Freesat HD back in June because we knew we would be changing the TV soon, changed it a couple of weeks ago to HD Ready (only 43 inches so no point in going for full HD at the extra cost!!) and we are now really pleased we invested in the HD box, massive difference in picture quality.
We did use it on the old SD CRT TV but it made absolutely no difference to the picture quality. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Freeview has a poor line-up of HD channels. Check what HD channels you can get in your area at http://ukfree.tv
It's a very disappointing HD line-up for most of Britain. Across much of the six counties, there is no Freeview HD whatsoever.
Channel Five suffered substantial losses last year and hasn't got the cash to broadcast in HD, so you might find you've only got BBC1HD/BBC2HD, ITV1HD and CH4 HD.
Even Film4 isn't going to be in HD on Freeview.
It really is pants and still Cameron does nothing.0 -

?? Think you've contradicted yourself there...?0 -
No he hasn't.. with a HD Freeview receiver, it will decode the (MPEG4) signals from the HD channels, as well as the (MPEG2) signals from the SD channels.The_stingemeister wrote: »?? Think you've contradicted yourself there...?
The HD receiver will have a video output, such as a scart socket, that allows it to be connected to a non-HD television.
So the picture you see, as Owain explained, will remain SD.0 -

Completely his fault, I agree. Still he should send a minister round soon to deal with it. It is just that he is a bit busy with other problems like what to wear at the wedding.
