A SCAM by post!

Options
This morning I received a letter from a company I have never heard of: Travel Steps. They claim that I have enjoyed the benefits of their shopping club and have given me a membership number. They said, if I do nothing I will be charged £99 for a one off membership fee! I have never heard of this company and don't know who they are or what they are talking about!!

On the outside of the envelope was the legend:
This is not a circular - Time sensitive documents you requested are enclosed!

I wrote (email) to them to say that I do not want the 'benefits' of their club and said that I would send their details to a number of organisations. I thought it would be a good idea to post here so that others will not be 'sucked in' by their HIGHLY dubious tactics.

I presume that by refusing to avail myself of their 'offer' I will be free of them?!

it's not worth opening or responding to
  • By responding to them at all you have now given them your email address for further spam. Bin before opening would be my advice.

I made the mistake of responding to a readers digest "prize draw". Only stopped getting spam after I moved house!

Yes from 'Tom Champagne' no doubt. I bought some books once from RD and was pestered for nearly ten years with their 'junk' mail.It stopped when I moved house .I never buy through the post anymore .if I can't find it in the shops then I don't bother buying it.

It is usually best just to discard and ignore such scam mailers.

If you ever want or need to send an email that may expose you to spam, just create a new temporary hotmail or similar email id and use that. Don’t use your own email id.

I've no reason to believe that Reader's Digest aren't a reputable organisation and that their draws aren't genuine, though I do despair of ploughing through all the rubbish that comes with each book promotion to ensure I send enough bits back in the envelope. And one or two of their books (I remember their DIY manual, which was essential to me when I first got married and we bought a house!) are actually useful. But I wonder how many stamps I've used over the years (once upon a time they used to prepay the return mail).

But yes, most other mailshots are just spam and most go straight in my bin unopened.

It`s taken them 3 years to find me but Readers Digest have written to me twice since Christmas with their prize draw offer.

Funny how nobody seems to win the RD prize draw - maybe I am cynical! How do I know if the people listed are genuine or not? If they are then great!

    Hi
By all means bin all un wanted mailshots ....but TAKE YOUR ADDRESS OFF before you do !!!
If you really want to stop junk mail use the Royal Mail opt out service for all addressed mail.
To stop flyers etc being delivered by your postman he gets paid extra to deliver these ( sorry Mr Postie !! ) get in touch with Royal Mail & fill out the form & send it back to them.
They dont like you doing this so make it a bit difficult.
Perhaps there is another posting (sorry for the pun) that gives more details.
I have done this & also signed up for the telephone & fax preference service for my home & business.
Stopped virtually all junk anything !!
Pity there is not something for junk emails
