Can i return a laptop because startup is slow?

You will have no rights to return it (as it never said how quick it started, nor is 2-3 minutes unreasonable), however it shouldn't take quite that long. Whats the spec of the PC?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

Thanks for the replies so far, this is the laptop.

That's a pretty good specification. Maybe time the boot exactly, using a watch, and then others can give you a comparison to benchmark.0

You may also find the initial boots take longer whilst it gets its house in order, and that it settles. But that does sound rather long - are there any unusual disk thrashing noises or anything?
FWIW it is probably full of OEM crap as mentioned above, and a hefty pruning required to get it back into a useful configuration. I really wish they wouldn't do that - it is a horrible job to clean the machine up.0 -
Ok easiest thing to do is to hold down the FN key when its off. then turn it on and release the FN key and it should boot into the diagnostics utility which will run through all the tests, if theres a fault it'll show there if not then its more than likely bloat/software problem. Windows does do a whole lot of updates (doublecheck that you are not running two security systems) and will prefetch a lot of files that are commenly used (and this will slow down the system for a couple of days/week).0

call Dell - they will go through the process of cleaning it up for you - they will be quicker and more effective in doing it for you and not only that its free....0

May well be it. Op, download Glary Utilities, it's completely free http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/glary-utilities/
It has loads of ways of speeding up your machine including a start-up module where you can delete everything you don't want to run at start-up.0 -
2-3 minutes. That would be a joy!
The old heap of junk that work has just given us as a 'new' laptop takes 11 minutes from switching on to being able to access the internet!0 -

I rang Dell when my new desktop locked me out of Vista (apparently because we didn't create an account in the name of the person that bought it, it threw a strop and locked the computer) - they were fantastic. They talked me through every possible solution in the book, step by step so I didn't have to deal with the possibility of sending it back for a complete restore. I think I ended up doing the restore myself and it worked. You could argue I was only happy with them because their solution helped, but the operator was very helpful and friendly.0 -
If you are hooked up to the Internet then Dell will probably do it for you0
