Dior watch bust after 4 years - £200 to repair!

Hi everyone

My husband bought me a Dior watch for my 40th birthday. It cost around £350. I don't wear it every day as I have a job where it could easily become damaged. About 4 months ago it stopped working.
I took it back to the place of original purchase (a watch concession in Selfridges) but they said they couldn't do anything and suggested I took it to the in store watch repair place to get a quote for repair.

One month later the price has come back - the work advised is a complete service of the movement inclusive of replacement crown, valued at £210.

I really like the watch for both aesthetic and sentimental reasons, but this seems bonkers! If it's really that much I may as well buy a new watch.

Do I have any consumer rights at all? 4 years for (what I think) is an expensive watch which has been looked after, surely can't be right?

I was thinking about getting another quote and also contacting Dior with a sob story (although can't think this would get me very far, but I could try!)

Any thoughts much appreciated.

    £1/week...less than 1p/hour?

Well I suppose, but I also have a 'work watch' - £5 from the market and still going after 5 years!

Get a second and even a third estimate/quote from somewhere else ?

but its not like the watch knows you havent been wearing it. Its been sitting in a box for four years but its still ticking waya in there.

Its annoying but I dont think 4 years is too bad. Sure some last much longer but there has too be a limit

I had a similar quote from Oris for a replacement crown and service. I got it done for £100 in in-time inside Debenhams. They used genuine Oris parts and still workin 3 years later.

Oh come on, 4 years for a watch costing £350 is pathetic. Cheap watches can last for years longer.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • Cheap watches tend to have electronic mechanisms and therefore very few working parts to wear. Expensive watches like Omega have full clockwork mechanisms which do wear and have to be repaired and serviced every 3-4 years. It's expensive, but part of the cost of ownership of a great timepeice.

Is your Dior mechanical? If so then shop around for a good watch repairer. If its electronic then try the battery.

No the Dior is a battery one, and I've had that changed in three places now - so I can rule that out!

I have a friend who works in Debenhams so might try there for a price. Plus it looks they give free estimates, whereas I had to cough up £25 in Selfridges!! (redeemable if you go ahead with the repairs....)

Many thanks everyone for your help

Sorry, MITS, not sure - all I know is that you don't have to wind it up and it has a battery
