To try and make the comparison simple I used the term 'cab' as the point in which the fibre service is transfered and delivered over the last leg over a non fibre medium...just to point out that VM and Infinity are not fibre all the way to the home only FTTP can be considered that,

this might be silly to add but have you made sure you can get the 40 meg for BT is your area, as where i live its still like 3 meg or something daft as i was looking in to switching

i dont have a bt phone line but i have signed up to the emails that lets you know when they are increasing my area i have also asked the online support bit

So cococoladebt if you consider BT are 'ripping people off' by claiming 'fibre optic broadband' then I presume you think VM are ripping you off also.

The point remains though.

Even if both are not fully fibred up to the property, BT Infinity still suffers from using old phone lines and performance can vary by distance. Virgin's cable broadband doesn't suffer from this issue.

That's because the bband signal is 'piggybacked' onto the same signal as the TV service,It's also boosted at the DA & DP cabinets.If the signal strength is low at the Modem but OK where it enters the home,a simple HDU (Reverse Line Home Distribution Unit booster) can be fitted to increase the strength,something you can't do with the BT product.

So your really paying £31.90 for option 1 or £43.90 for option 2.

I currently get 30.8mb from BT infinity and it is super fast, no issues yet

We have quite a few remote clients show around 3mb on BT page but only get 1 mb. This may be a "figures" excersise for teh 2mb per household government requirement.

Our office is 20M from the fibre DSLAM. We get around 20 mb most afternoons sometimes as low as 3 or 4 mb. During one heavy contract we were working during the night because speeds are 37 mb at that hour.

There's lots of myths going around, but the contracts always say "Up to 40" and "15 mb minimum." From experiance trying to solve client problems, unless the sync speed drops below 18 mb (15 mb down) it doesn't matter what speed you buy; You won't get any improvement.

Until this contract is challenged ISPs will keep loading the lines until the public complain. Problem is if you were getting 3mb you're not going to complain if fibre gets you 15.

we live 7 miles from the exchange but only 0.5 miles from the cabinet. On adsl we barely got 512k, we switched to infinity in June and i've just done a speed test which gives 33.7mb. We were only expected to get 32mb and given it's peak time as well I can't fault the service. But, as stated, the £25/month does not include BT line rental which is a minimum of £10 a month on top. Also, virgin do good value bundles with cable tv which would maybe make them more competitive. I used to have virgin media in my old house and loved it but it's not available here but am very happy with the infinity so far

I'm on virgin 50mb with the superhub, I've not had many problems with it I get 47downloadn and 4.7 upload.

TBH I hardly use that speed apart from maybe downloading a game sometimes over steam. I feel that the 30 is enough but I believe only the 50 and 100 arnt subject to any throttling.
