Car Insurance - Crash/ New Car, Cancel? Help?

Hi All, I thought I would come back for some more trusted advice.

I had an old car during 2010, it was an R redge Vauxhall Corsa. Not much cop, but anyway it was insured by my dad with me as the named driver.

Just last month I had an accident as someone hit my vehicle, now they say it was my fault and we have what appears to be a dispute, Well that is what I think is happening.

In the meantime I got myself a new car as that one was no good and I needed a new car anyway. So I got the car and took out some new insurance.

I was very wrong in thinking that I could just cancel my old insurance, maybe a penalty or two and then all sorted!

The insurance is with AA and is underwritten by Co-op, I am told each time I call 8 times in all that my file is lost and they do not have details, I cannot cancel the policy until the case is dealt with. Now I don't even know what this case is, and the advisors say it could be even the fact that I reported the accident.

Does anyone know what I can do, I simply cannot pay both and I am in disperse, pleaseeeee money saving forum guys!.

Many Thanks

Sarah x

You cannot cancel a policy once a claim has been made on it, or is pending.
  • hi there, could you help me find where it would say that in my policy documents please, where would it be? I am not sure how i will find the money to pay two insurance policies? would there be anywhere i could find help with this.

There is nothing stopping you taking a new policy for the new car. You need to pay for it and declare that there is a claim out-standing on your current "other" policy.

You can't cancel the other policy as there is a claim/incident pending.

  • thanks, i have indeed done that with the new policy, and i am now paying 2 monthly payments for two insurance policies, and i really do not have the money, i can fully understand that i cannot cancel until the claim is dealt with, but some advisers have said that i have to pay the full policy after that too. They keep giving us conflicting advice and i do not know where to turn as i am getting bank charges and struggling to pay other bills because of these two policies.
  • also they cannot provide any details of this supposed claim as they have lost the files, so they are just keeping us hanging on while they "find" the files, surely if they have no details of a claim and have indeed lost the files, then there actually is no claim ?

Unfortunately car insurance tend to mainly be 12 month periods that are paid for fully. Once you make a claim you will be unable to reclaim any of your payments.

Because you are paying monthly (you have still paid the full amount upfront, but have just taken credit to do this)you will still have to pay the rest of the insurance. It may have been better to try and add the new car onto your existing policy (if they were able to insure you new car).

This means that you will now have to pay the 2 monthly payments every month until the the initial policy 12 months are up.

Why can not transfer the existing policy onto the new car?
  • basically we got a much better price from the new policy, and also this new is not my dads car it is actually mine and my partners car, so we needed the insurance to be in mine and my partners name not my dads.
