My broadband usage is very high

I have received a warning email by BT about nearly reaching my broadband usage limit. It has never happened before in the 5 years I have been with them. I know my kids are on holidays and watching youtube a lot, but I never used so much, even when I was downloading movies and 24.
What could cause this?

Torrent software installed in the background...Could be anything. Install TBBMETER and watch the traffic.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    Ihre Kinder vielleicht?
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • What plan are you on? If you're on their 10gb plan that is only 300mb a day, which you can burn through with just a couple of videos on youtube. It's easily done without realising. if you log into the BT site there is a broadband usage meter that updates each night at midnight. If you're on the 10gb plan you should have used up to 6gb by now if usage were spread out evenly over the month.

How much does it cost if you go over? I'm with madasafish, If I go over I get charged £2 per Gig, so it doesn't worry me too much.

It's £5 for each 5 Gig block or part thereof. First month that you go over may be forgiven. Every subsequent month is charged. 10 days to go in April so plenty of time to cut down for a few days.

First step: make sure your router is secure with a WPA2 Key that isn't guessable.

Check the kids haven't suddenly learnt how to download more than just Youtube videos ;-)

iplayer is also a biggy which they might have been watching etc

the big problem is that everything uses more bandwidth than it did 5 years ago, even normal websites have more content on them what with flash animations etc, 5 years ago i could just about cope with 25gb, now i regulaly go over 250gb with iplayer, sky player, sky anytime+, youtube, skype, gaming etc
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

The router key is a 10 digit un-guessable mess. My plan allows 40Gb and I am now on 35Gb. I will have to ask the kids. They did mention that every subsequent month will be charged at £5 per 5Gb. My son once showed me from his Windows 7 laptop that there was someone log on to our router that he did not recognize. I cannot, however, do the same from my XP laptop. Does anyone know how to do that on my XP laptop?
