WOW....train travel is expensive isn't it!! Thanks for looking at that for me isplumm
I think the recruitment guy said the job paid about £16k/£17k. Is it do-able to pay that much to commute after paying £550 to my other half, £103.49 for a loan and £40 for my phone bill?
You'd be surprised...
According to google it's 36miles between Swindon and Bath, if your car did 40mpg that's 1.8 gallons of petrol a day, with fuel at £1.30 a litre you'll be spending £10-11 on petrol. The there is say £5 (a total guess) to park and about £1.50 a day in running costs for the car.
That's a good £15 a day if you used a car."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -

Assuming you are on the standard tax code for an individual under 65 - 747L (find it on your pay slip from April 6th onwards or ask your local tax office), your calculation for take home pay is as follows (say your salary is £16.5k):
Gross Pay per Month: 16500 / 12 = £1375
Monthly Tax Free Allowance: 7475 / 12 = £623
Monthly Taxable Income at Standard Rate (20%): 1375 - 623 = £752
### Monthly Income Tax: 752 x 20% = £150 ###
Primary Threshold for National Insurance (Monthly Basis): £602
Monthly Income Subject to Employee's Contribution (12%): 1375 - 602 = £773
### Monthly National Insurance Contribution: 773 x 12% = £93 ###
Net Pay per Month: 1375 - 150 - 93 = £1132
I'd expect the figure to be very close to this. However there will be some very slight differentials as I have rounded all the numbers to whole pounds.
This analysis only applies if your income is more or less distributed evenly during the financial year 2011-12, whether you're paid weekly or monthly.0 -

Give the job a try out before you buy an expensive season ticket. As you are only going to be there via an agency then you could get booted out anytime or you may hate it and want to leave.
A season ticket will be of no use to you then.0 -

I don't think I could get booted out at any time as it's a permanent position. I am going to see another agency in Swindon this afternoon who have a temp position ideally suited to me so fingers crossed!
Thanks for everyones help so far!0 -

I haven't looked yet, no. But thank you for suggesting this!
I will look into it but I have a feeling it would take a lot of time to get to work on the bus from Swindon to Bath as I have looked at a bus from Swindon to Chippenham and that takes over an hour
I'm sure I'll find something in Swindon....fingers crossed everyone!0 -
The bus journey takes slightly over 2 hours each way plus waiting time in Chippenham changing buses.
Cheap though - £7 a day with a day rover ticket but 5 hours a day commuting.......0
