Eon billing problems?
Options
We haven't submitted a meter reading for 12 months with eon. We are on the following plan
E.ON SaveOnline 3
which charges at
Electricity
Normal units up to 900 kWhs per year
19.257 pence
Normal units
9.7545 pence per kWh
Gas
Normal units up to 2680 kWhs per year
6.17085 pence
Normal units
2.68485 pence per kW
I pay by monthly direct debit which have changed a couple of times this year but average £100 per month.
Having recently submitted new metter reading EON have said i owe them a further £900. This seems very large for a house that is empty for 5 days a week. The bulk of the bill is Gas with eon claiming i have used 270% more gas than last year.
Key facts
we use gas for central heating 7 radiators on a combi boiler, combi bolier for water. we have electric oven. We had double glazing fitted last year (before last meter reading) and loft insulation.
i apparently used 5772kwh of electric and 35131kwh of gas.
with an estimate i will use £1000 worth of gas and £500 of electric over the next 12 months.
They wish for me to increase my direct debit to £220.
i have kept track of meter reading every 3-5 days.

My account shows the following in billing as well.
11 Apr 11 Energy Charges 1042.77 when the meter readings and bill was created.
14 Apr 11 Energy Charges 51.04
after my second set of meter reading. 51.04 for 3 days is obviously very high as the house was emtpy (no heating etc) in the day and very minimal (if any) heating at night. at most one house.
Does this seem high to anyone? do the meter readings seem strangely high. And has anyone been in this situation before?
should i get them to check my meters or is it a billing problem? or is this likely

When the house is empty are you sure the CH was off, even the coldest periods ?
Check the meter to see if it reads in cu ft or m3 and check the bill uses the same figure.0 -
I had the exact same issue with EON. I was paying £90 a month and at the end of the year I received a further bill for £800! They also wanted to raise my direct debit to £140! I queried it but they insisted it was correct. I switched immediately and paid it off in instalments.
I think EON are very expensive. I have had very reasonable bill from Npower since switching.0 -
The single readings you quote for April won't necessarily compare with winter usage etc.
Do you genuinely believe the meter to be faulty? If so get it checked - you will likely be charged if it is found accurate however - or is it ability to pay the debt that is the real concern here?
When did Eon last read the meter by the way?0 -
eon have never read the meter (only my readings) as there is noone in.
the ability to pay isnt a major problem but i dont think its correct. basically my leccy and gas usage would need to be around 1900 for it to be correct.... and i dont think we have used that. if i was electric that was high id accept that, i use a lot of electric but not really gas.
we had the heating on for at most 5 hours per day over the winter period, on low, and the gas fire on for 1 hour at most each night....
we take showers, and have a combi boiler.... maybe it is correct... im just not sure.
how do i check the metric/ imperial on the bill ?0 -
Quite a lot of Gas Meters have been found to be over charging so def have it checked the odds are in your favour also get a physical reading from their reader & as Molerat says find out if correct measurement being usedto bill you. Switch to a capped rate Online 6 seems to be the newest.0

You'll be hard pressed to find a tariff in today's market as cheap as save online 3 to switch too! But look at todays reads as you have stated and do eon have an ACCURATYE read from march/april 2010, if not their annual usage is still an est, need to look at 2 reads where both current and pas t read are from the same month and 123 months apart0

We had a really cold spell before Christmas and even though you may not of had your heating on all day it would be working hard to get your room up to temperature. I think everybody had larger than normal bills this winter.
You cannot really compare you gas reading taken now as your usage will be alot less then December 2010. I turned my heating off on the 1st April and have only used 3 units since for cooking on the gas hob and heating the water for two hours a day.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Switch to a capped rate Online 6 seems to be the newest.
Just to point out that SaveOnline 6 is not a capped tariff, the unit rates can go up or down if we have a price change.
Ok, over to the OP.
Hi toothe,
I really think the first thing to do is check that you are being billed correctly as molerat has suggested, it should show on your meter if it is cu ft or m3.
If this is correct, then I would advise you to speak to our consumption department.
They can go through the usage and your appliances and check the account for you.
They can normally identifie if they think the meter may be faulty but they would only recomend a check meter if this really looks to be the case as it is chargeable to the customes if there is nothing wrong with the meter.
If you need any more info, just shout up.

the gas meter says m3
how do i find if this is what im billed for.
Also the gas meter squeaks as it turns (is this just age?)
are eon providing smart meters yet?
can we have the meter moved outside so it can be read regular?
my biggest concern is the billed amount for 3 days...0 -
11 Apr 11 Energy Charges £1042.77 < that was the charge we were billed
14 Apr 11 Energy Charges £51.04 < this i'm completly unsure about....0
