the reasons i was given were that i needed a 'Reference number from the manufacturer, without which they wont deal with the seller and that reference number wont be given to the seller under 'The Data Protection Act'.
Sorry, I don't understand what you are saying here.

"The reasons I was given..." reasons for what?

the reasons the seller gave for not getting in touch with the manufacturer and for expecting me to organise the repair via the manufacturer myself. in other words, the seller doesn't want to do anything unless i have gotten a reference number from the manufacturer and if i fail to get a repair organised and authorised.

Then read MSE's How to Complain article.

As has been explained, you should be seeking a remedy from whoever sold the thing to you. If the seller wants to consult the manufacturer, that's up to him.

You haven't given much indication of timescales.
When did you buy the tv?

You say you have been in touch with the manufacturer. What was their response?
Despite your statutory rights being with the seller, you may well get a quicker outcome from the manufacturer.

How did you pay for the purchase? By credit card?

    Who is the seller?

After 6 months the seller can insist on you getting a report that shows an inherant fault if you proceed down the SoGA line.

It may be easier using the warranty from the manufacturer if the seller is being difficult.

my apologies for not giving the purchase date, i really thought i had. it was purchased last year and registered within a couple of days of getting it on the 10/06/2015.
after getting back in touch with the seller, i was told that if it is a manufacturing fault, they are happy to replace the set. i dont really want to do that as i dont think the set is made now, an updated model being out. i have also been asked to supply a pic as well but that is next to impossible as the socket is right close to the main back panel of the tv and it points downwards. trying to tip the tv over will be risky because of the way the feet are positioned and they seem to be a weak spot of the set, fine if you're careful.
as i have been asked, the seller is Richer Sounds. they have already swapped the tv once. i only had the 1st one a few days. i sat watching it one evening, thought i saw something move, couldn't make out what it could have been so ignored it. a few minutes later, the tv fell over, the culpret being one of the feet breaking off, as i mentioned above. the screen was damaged and the set replaced. if that's the road they want to go down, so be it, but it will have to be covered by the same warranty, be an LG 4k smart tv of same or bigger screen. wont want anything like a Samsung, absolute rubbish!! i wont be at home tomorrow so wont know what will happen until i get home from hospital after lunch.
    will update if i can

hi. i purchased a TV from a well known and respected (as far as i know) seller over the Internet in May last year. i registered the item with the manufacturer for the warranty, but it also came with an extra 5 years cover via the seller.
