I've returned possibly half a dozen microwave ovens within the 12 months warranty period, all for becoming faulty.

It's a disgrace that such poor quality products are for sale in our stores.

Buy better brands? though not a fault of the retailer.(was it from Currys?)

You've bought over 6 mircowaves that keep going wrong in less than 12 months?

Doesn't that tell you you're not very good at choosing which is the best brand to buy?

We've had a variety of brands.. most of them well known, purchased from a number of retailers, including currys.

The ovens have developed various faults: a sudden drop in power, the blowing of a non-serviceable light, faulty keypad, corrosion in the chamber, seized turntable, etc..

And the retailer does shoulder the blame. Their buyers should examine and test the appliances properly before decided to sell them.

But then if they have to test everything for at least 12 months to see if the product will last for at least 12 months then everything will be out of date by the time they actually end up selling anything!

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
