Flights to Philadelphia and affordable accommodation in NY

Hi there,

I'm planning on flying to Philadelphia from Glasgow to visit a friend the first week in June. I've done a few searches and comefli.com seem to have a few decent deals via US Airways, Air Canada, Continental and BA. I just wanted to get some feedback on the airlines before booking? Priorities would be legroom, inclusion of meals and drinks in the price and the overall quality :T

If it's not too much to ask in the one post, I'm also looking to fit in a wee trip to New York and wondered if anyone could recommend affordable accommodation not too far from the hustle and bustle in addition to any other money saving tips, e.g. tourist discount cards or suchlike :D

Thanks,

Lou :EasterBun

Air Canada or BA - I wouldn't touch the other two.

What do you class as affordable for NY?
    Gone ... or have I?

I haven't looked into prices yet but heard that hotels can be pretty expensive? Would be looking for a double/twin room :)

    Thanks,

Philadelphia is close to New York and Washington, so you could fly to either (or Baltimore) and take the Amtrak train to Philadelphia. ($36 one way per person, check https://www.amtrak.com)

As for accommodation, we recently spent a week in NY, in an apartment in Brooklyn, here:

So much cheaper than a hotel...

In economy class there is not all that much to choose between those airlines in terms of legroom and food. US and Continental will charge for alcoholic drinks. For me the more important question is can you get a direct flight from your preferred airport or will you need to make a connection, which will add significantly to your overall travel time.
  • For simplicity, US Airlines would be my recommendation, simply because PHL is one of their hubs, and they have seasonal direct service between Glasgow and Philadelphia all summer. I recently flew from Dublin to Philadelphia with them, and service was fine. Nothing great but absolutely fine. Most Continental and US Airways flights from regional UK airports are on narrow-body (single aisle) Boeing 757, so there's no middle block of seats.

In any trip to the US, I'd sacrifice airline quality for a direct flight. I've lost bags and missed connections on so many trips, I prefer to just get there in one hop. Quicker and less chance of things going wrong.
