They are just pocket camcorders which make it really easy to upload video to yt fb etc. No converting or anything needed.
There will be many others as well. See ebay.

    What model is your camera?

The models described may offer a more 'crisp' picture, perhaps more portable and there will be no need for conversion for YouTube and the like.

But if the quality in the JVCs 'Ultra Fine' mode suits your needs, carry on using what you have now.

I've just purchased the JVC Everio with Ccd sensor, a great little lightweight point and shoot pocket sized hd camera so far.

I didn't realize before purchasing it that it writes vids in .MOD format. Although renaming the file to mpg will play in WMP, i'd like to be able to reduce the file-size and convert to .AVI so uploading to the Tube or FB is possible.

According to wikipedia, MOD files are fully MPEG2 compatible, allowing any video editing software to work with them.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOD_%28video_format%29

AVI is simply a standardised file container. The standard doesn't describe the underlying encoding scheme of the multimedia contained in an AVI file.

You could put an MPEG2 video or an MPEG4 video, or some other type of video, into an AVI container without problems.

avidemux is free s/w that seems to work okay for these sorts of jobs. It has loads of knobs and buttons to twiddle.

I wouldn't use MediaCoder because it has aware/spyware in it and quite nasty it is too. It's very difficult to get rid of it once it's installed from what I have heard.

Earlier versions were meant to be clean so you would have to research which those are.

MediaCoder is quite open about the fact:
The MediaCoder installer uses OpenCandy which recommends software during the installation.

ESET Smart Security blocked access to the Open Candy server during installation anyway.

Not sure that it attempts to contact the server after installation. Didn't notice it do so during my test.
I guess one could remove the offending .dll, described in the Open Candy FAQ.
