how does he do this? I was under the impression that if you earn over £7,475 you start paying tax, linky

I think she is just quoting her DH's salary, and that is it gross.

I think she means that her husband's gross income is £16500, not that he doesn't pay tax.

He brings home approx £13,750 after Tax! When working out student grants - it is based on gross pay ie before tax and NI deductions.

All I wanted was a simple answer - what is the cut off point for a student to get full grant and bursary! No-one knows my families full situation or what we might or might not decide to do so please don't jump to conclusions! Thanks rachie_2011 for the information asked for not a load of sanctimonious, opinionated drivel!

I think all unis have their own bursary schemes so you would need to look at the finance page on whatever uni he is hoping to go to.

IIRC the cut off is around £35k gross joint earnings. Then there's a sliding scale to around £50k where the grant goes down but the loan goes up. Above £50k there is no grant, just loan.

There are also bursaries (= free money) but they vary by University and course.

Actually, you'll find regulation 402(b)(ii) is relevent in this case:

"Any student whose parents are unable to take criticism will be made ineligible support for the duration of their studies."

So why don't you provide all the relevant information so people can make informed decisions? Or do you think this discussion would still head the same way?

What message does it send to your son, that you are trying to keep your earnings below a threshold to avoid being expected to contribute to his education?
