Internet abroad?

I dont understand about using the internet on your phone abroad? does it cost a fortune? if you go into a wifi area, is it free?

I have always avoided using my phone for the internet when aborad, because of concerns about the cost, but wonder whether anyone can clarify?

If you use Wifi then it's free other than any cost to use the wifi. The caveat is you must check to ensure you are using the wifi, not mobile data, or you'll get a shock when you get your bill.

If you use mobile data then the cost can vary, how much, hard to say. Your provider can tell you the cost per megabyte and they may do deals. I'm with Vodafone and I get 25mb in europe for £2 a day if I use data. Out of bundle costs can be up to £5 a megabyte.

EU Data should be capped to €50 (I think) but outside the EU no such capping exists.

Remember if you have a smart phone they may check for updates to email, facebook, weather etc, so you may use more data than you think.

If you are unsure then turn the ability to receive mobile data OFF.

Check the costs of roaming, before you go, with your provider.

Just spotted your post and wonder if I can add to the question of phone use.I am going to Spain in July and wonder if anyone has any advise on the cheapest way to access the internet. I am taking my lap top so would like to know if I can find out about WiFi availability in Guadamar

So other than using an Internet Cafe WiFi connection, you can look into mobile Internet using a separate Data SIM. Not cheap in Spain.
