I'm a noisy neighbour

Edit to add: I'm truly not being nasty but it occurs to me to suggest that you check out whether there could be any truth whatever in her allegations that there is noise in the night since your yourself are not there! I'm not for one moment suggesting that your husband is up to anything wicked or monstrous but could he perhaps be having a mate or two round for an illicit beer, a few games of poker or some other naughtiness? You need to be on very solid ground - for heaven's sake, don't lose that letter since it may prove to be the most unassailable piece of evidence that anyone could possibly have given you.

No I come home on my break for a snooze and hubby is either watching a film or asleep in bed. Plus our friends live 20 miles away as we moved town when we bought the house.

Get a solicitor to get an interdict against her for you using her letter and her previous behavior as evidence to justify this, Include all her previous acts, banging on walls etc. This will give you more ammo to use to back up your side of the story to police and other authorities next time she starts her nonsense.

Sorry not familiar with law, what is this and does it cost?

    Update

Just received a letter from said neighbour saying that she has contacted environmental health re last night and they agree it is an act of provocation so further action will be taken against you. It goes on to say that she is sad we are not good neighbours and we have disturbed her with shouting in the night (I work nights!) and drilling.
"Maybe when your house is compulsary purchased by environmental health you will realize what you have done"

I think you're taking the right steps outlined in your post after this one. Clearly the woman appears to have some serious mental health problems.

I think adouglasmhor is referring to what in English law is called an injunction. Whether or not you can get one without a solicitor's help and advice is more than I know. Others on here may be able to advise.

However, if this neighbour is that screwy, an injunction won't achieve anything in any case as she'll simply ignore or defy it. You'd also perhaps be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut since the Police and EH have many powers vested in them to deal with situations such as this which won't involve you in court action or expense. Why not let them see what they can do first?

I wonder if this lady has family that can be contacted as clearly (going on what you say) she is hearing things and may be in need of more care and support than she's getting. Perhaps it needs a son or daughter to be a little more involved in her life.

It's a worry for you and quite frightening to feel that your home and child are under any kind of threat but I do think that you are taking all the wise steps you can and hopefully, it'll all prove to be a storm in a teacup and soon settle down. Hope it goes well with the authorities later on today.

We had problems with next door neighbour putting notes through our door, copies of every one were passed on to council and he was visited by community police officer and warned he would be charged with harassment if he sent any more.
The main thing is to stay in contact with relevant department at council, probably called something like neighbourhood nuisance team and let them know about anything she does/says. They will know she is unreasonable and are there to help you.

She lives with her son who is in his 20s although we hardly see him. Her daughter and the daughter's 3 children used to live with the old man in the house next door to her but moved away recently.

The HV has phoned and given reassurance and has log what I told them and have reiterated that they have no concerns regarding my child's care from a HV point of view.

I have scanned the letter from said neighbour just incase. I have requested an official letter from work regarding my shifts. Don't think there is much else I can do until the police come round later.

Ignore her, she's plainly not a well woman. Don't get involved in any dispute with her which you'll have to declare to any buyer in the future if you decide to sell.

??? Surely you only have to declare a dispute if its ongoing at the time of selling the property - if it's been dealt with and is considered closed by any involved agencies then why would you need to declare it?

Any disputes involving the police have to be declared, regardless of whether they are deemed to be closed, buyers have a right to know of any problems before they commit to buying a house.

I would be tempted to carry on drilling....... she's a crackpot who threatens your family. Stand your ground and fight fire with fire, phone EH about the rats in her garden ;o))

    Best of luck.

Ironically I had mentioned the sofa to the neighbourhood warden last week and have since received an email to say it has been past to environmental health. Oops!

The police came round last night and were really understanding. They went round to see her but she did not answer the door. They said they will keep trying.

Was thinking of talking to the housing department and outlining the things that she has done over the years. Or is it too late now.

We actually don't have any drilling to do now for a while as we are going to re-tile next although we will need to cut the tiles!

On a slightly somber note. This is actually the last thing I needed when a friend of mine died yesterday of cancer. Does my neighbour not realise there is more to life than this.
